I made a quick swing into the PS area just a few minutes ago to see what the Private Stock guys were up to. Some really amazing instruments under construction.

Rick A. sanding a sweet spalted maple top

Eric G. soldering and assembling

Rich S. with some sweet inlays. Crummy photo, but cool blue and white inlays.

Does Eric do the final assembly on all PS guitars? He has done on all mine...

Shawn@PRS

I'm going to try to make this a weekly event, so look for more PS in the future!

Eric does most of the PS assemblies, but sometimes Len and Scott from PTC chip in and give him a hand. Just as the PS team helps out the PTC when we need a hand.

They're Hot Tamales rims with Lemonhead centers. :)

I tend to watch the discovery channel a bit. Some of the shows I like are when they show how things are made. I especially like watching the shows where exotic cars like Lamborghini's and Ferrari's etc are being made. When I see these pics of these PRS guitars at the factory, I get the same feeling. The exotic guitars of the world. Just awesome. I hope some day I can travel again and I'll take a trip down and see this stuff.

I love those 'How It's Made' type programmes! True reality TV. There's another show called Megafactories. They've done Ikea, Boeing, Guiness, Jack Daniels... You name it, they've been there. Love to see PRS on something like that.

I'm cross contaminating my own thread here, but I doubt anyone will mind.

This is a very special guitar made for Carlos Santana and was ordered for him by his lovely bride Cindy. This has quickly become his #1 and you can tell by the play wear. The guitar was sent back to the PTC for a setup and some TLC.

PS 4089, SC Ted with McCarty thickness. A big beefy one piece quilt in Armandos Amethyst with a Burst added. Mine also has Maple Binding around the headstock like that one does. Super lightweight with a smelly Obeche body. (Not smelly anymore, since it is now finished!)

Not really a PS shot, but I thought Id show this anyway. Many people ask about the thickness of our tops. Most of the maple tops start out as 5 quarter and then are carved into shape. The center of the guitar stays roughly 5 quarter thickness, while they edges swoop down into the famous "Violin" carve. This illustrates the eventual binding height as well as the overall thickness of the top.

Agreed though I'd be really curious to play one for a while and see how the tonal properties compare to other woods since it essentially has to be soaked and harded in superglue to keep it from breaking (its crazy brittle).

Only if too "punky." If caught early enough before it starts to rot, it doesn't need that procedure. Even then it may only have to be treated in spots. I've owned quite a few and only one was treated this way.

Hey Shawn, stupid question. Is there a tear out issue with maple quilt when it's being carved in the CNC machine?

Quilt certainly tears out easier than flamed maple. It's also harder to sand because it has a tendency to get lumpy, as does Swamp Ash.

PatentCAD, do you think that's your dark cherryburst front and center? Killer! Makes it worth the 'pain'.

Man, I surely hope so, that's really what I ordered that's fantastic. They were supposed to send wood sample jpgs, but if that's the guitar, no worries : ). Looks like a cocobolo fretboard too. How many PS DGT guitars could they have in line to build just like that? I guess there is a good chance that's the guitar.

Maybe Shawn could comment on whether that dark cherryburst DGT above (just underneath the 'Oh My' comment) has a bird on the neck heel, if so, that would probably have to be my guitar. Looks exactly like both the color sample jpeg I sent them and the wood grain pattern example I asked them to go after. That would be perfect. That was back in mid-November, so maybe the timing is right, if a bit early based on the delivery time they originally quoted me.

That has to be your guitar. November order? I would say they are running behind, haha! That's what I love about PS, from concept to creation, they can crank out your dream guitar in most cases in 3 months!

Well, here are the jpgs we forwarded Tina for the color and wood grain desired:

Wood grain:

Color to match:

http://guitarasylum.com/site-pages/anderson/anderson-colors/images/anderson-dark-cherry-burst.jpg

Cocobolo fretboard, Artist style birds (like on an MEQ or SC-58), 12th fret style bird on the neck heel, cocobolo headstock verneer, flame maple matching cavity covers on back and truss rod cover, ebony tuning pegs, hybrid gold/sliver hardware, otherwise like a stock DGT.

So if that's not my guitar somebody ordered a PS just like it around the same time. Hope that's it, that guitar is stunning.

I hope that's the guitar. If so, yeah, they nailed it. Can't wait. Maybe Shawn can take a peek at the neck heel next week and let me know if it matches my description, if there's a bird on the heel then it kind of has to be my guitar. At this point I guess given how it matches what I ordered, it's 95% my guitar, what puzzles me is they never sent wood/stain samples, and they told my dealer they would.

I don't care, if that's the piece, I'll be ecstatic. Maybe they just know this and they trust their own judgement. If it makes the customers happy in the end, it works, the rest is white noise.

I must say the photos of the guitars in this thread are an amazing testament to PRS, they really have elevated the fine art of guitar making to a new level of wonder over the past 20+ years since they started the Private Stock program. Awe inspiring in every way. Yeah the process was a little baffling, particularly on the communication side, but I had faith the outcome would be like this. They build the finest guitars on the planet. Hell, their regular production guitars are absolutely stunning.

Which is why you, me and many others have dedicated sufficient funds to building these PS guitars that someone else would allocate to buy a used car.

We do lose some perspective around here, in the private stock world of hi-end boutique guitars. Even the "entry level" private stock is financially way above what I ever thought I would pay for a guitar as recently as about 12 years ago. Even now, I can't justify spending the kind of cash these builds require, without selling a bunch of my existing guitars to offset the cost. I can rationalize the expense a lot better to myself by saying "It cost me these 3 guitars I wasn't playing much anyway" than for me to say to myself "I just spent $xx,xxx on a guitar, of all things, and I'm not even a professional player."

I tease Howie sometimes...and some other members on this forum....when I mention that all their great purchases are "tax deductions" each year.

I just hope somebody (Shawn) can take a peek at that guitar's neck heel today and tell me if there is a bird inlay or not so I can know if that is indeed the guitar I ordered back in November : ).

When I started this project I agreed not to seek out specific guitars, I would only photograph random guitars whose paths I happened to cross.

A wise decision...that way, no one can accuse you of "playing favorites" and this way the most striking examples of the "Art of the Private Stock Team" get documented for us.

And this thread will become a very useful tool for others who are seeking ideas as far as how to spec out future private stocks.

And BTW....the PS team is NOT 20+ years old, per a prior post. I believe the first "official" Private Stock was dated circa 17 years ago, with most of the production ramping up in the later '90's. Of course, those who like to sell stuff on eBay will continue to pontificate on how the PS series was "merely" the outgrowth of the initial Artist &/or "Signature" Series. To that...I say "Bushwah" :proud: since a private stock is the closest we can get to standing shoulder to shoulder with the PS team as they create the concept we have envisioned to become our "perfect guitar". :top:

Yeah, the PS program is not that old, that was a Pcad brain fart. I owned PS#176, c.2000 (sold it after about 2 years), and the program was maybe 2-3 years old at that point.

I suppose the odds of that piece pictured above not being my guitar are pretty slim. We'll find out soon enough.
