View Full Version : Still thinking 408

Stopped by my PRS dealer today, and looked at a tremolo 408 standard.
Pretty sure before long I will be picking one up soon sans tremolo.

Question, I know the non maple cap one would be like my Gibson SG, all mahogany top, and the maple top 408 are like my SEs with their maple caps on them.
Is there going to be any big difference in sound between the two, or is it mainly cosmetics?

I wish the antique natural color was up on the MT page.
Anyone have an example of it elsewhere?
http://prsguitars.com/408/colors.php

Now for the standard mahogany one, they have a nice natural color.
http://prsguitars.com/408standard/colors.php

http://prsguitars.com/408standard/img/front.jpg

I like that.
Now when you get the natural sides, back, and neck, is it a lighter color, or is it going to be the exact same natural as the picture above shows for the front?

Other than deciding between the standard and the MT, I would be going with the pattern thin neck and a stoptail piece.
I take it these come with 10s, so I would have to have the dealer readjust it for 9s, as I run 9s on all of my other guitars.

I can hear the difference between the MT and Standards. It's exactly what you would expect when comparing the two. My natural 408 is the same color all the way around.

All things being equal (which, hey, it's wood, there's variety) the all-mahogany guitar should have a thicker, more prominent midrange, while the maple top model should have a bit more top end spank.

Thanks guys for the input.

Shawn, any chance you have a photo of a guitar somewhere with that Antique Natural?

I played a beautiful pair at Wildwood last week. Both had IRW necks. The Standard was my favorite...then I played the MT. :o

With the rosewood neck, both had a very bell-like tone that I didn't expect from the Standard. I liked both a lot, and my next guitar will be a 408 with IRW neck. I'm going to go with the MT. It just seemed to ring forever. Those pickups are amazing.

I'm patiently waiting for mine. I ordered a 408 10-top with a RW neck. It's been about four weeks now so I'm starting to get a little anxious. The closer it gets the harder it becomes to wait.

Emailed my dealer yesterday, and he left me voicemail when I was in bed.
Will be talking with him today.
I also think I will go with the tremolo now over the stop tail piece.

Customer Service sent me a pic of the Antique Natural since it is not up on the site yet under colors, and I like it, so I will probably go with it.

Does anyone run 9-42s on their 408s or any PRS?
I think these ship with 10s, but I have 9s on all of my guitars, and I just like Super Slinky Cobalts in 9s the best.
There should not be any problem running 9s on the 408 right?

LSchefman
01-17-2013, 10:48 AM
I dont' think there'd be a problem with 10s.

Now that I have the 408 pickups, I love what they do. I could get by with one guitar.

I pulled the trigger today at lunch.

Antique Natural (Matt from Customer Service sent me a 513 pic in that color yesterday to see it)
Maple Top
Tremolo
Pattern Thin neck.

I looked at a 408 Standard he had in stock, looked nice.
It was a quilt I believe, and I looked at a P22 with a flame pattern.

So basically we get what we get when they pick the two pieces?
Either pattern looks great to me.

I have the Antique Natural picture on my Droid, but I cannot upload to my server from work.

He will put the order in today, but he said turn around is around 4 to 6 months since it has to be built?
Long time to wait...

Yes, Matt just emailed me back, and said around 4 months.
Hmmmm, end of May?

On lunch here at work, I decided to try Googling PRS Antique Natural, and ran across this Custom 22 at Wild West's site.
http://wildwestguitars.com/Custom%2022/dis-prod_998_standard.html

This is pretty much how mine should look.

http://wildwestguitars.com/images/product-images/1346782592Right.jpg

Or maybe like this Mira.
I think the one at Wild West has Sunburst thrown into it too.
I will be happy with either color.

Good to know the 9s are working.
I much prefer them over 10s.

I hereby changed my mind :D
Not the guitar, but the color.

I think the natural sides, back, and neck are going to pop more with the Jade Green.
The more I see the Jade, the more I like it.

Called my dealer up today and had him change the order, so it will look like this.

Well dagnabbit, screwed over :D
My dealer just called me a few minutes ago to inform me that PRS emailed him and said the Jade colored guitars have to be sprayed with a Jade neck, sides, and back.
Whats up with that?
I have seen other Jade guitars with the natural sides, back and neck.\

He is emailing them back to let them know I will take the Antique Natural again since it comes looking like the picture I posted above for the sides, back, and neck.

How do you get Jade then with the natural color?
Artist, Private Stock???

I do not understand why it cannot be sprayed like the above guitar.

Question:
On the color page for the 408 MT, it says coming soon for the Antique Natural.
http://www.prsguitars.com/408/colors.php

Does this mean the color is not available yet to spray on the guitar, so my order might be delayed?
Or just that they have not uploaded a color swatch yet to the page?
If so, I want to change my order then to get the guitar sooner.
And if so, what other colors do they have where you can have the natural lighter color for the back, sides, and the neck?

Well, I hope I do not have to change the order again.
I am just curious why PRS does not show the color swatch on their site.
I was really wanting the jade color until we were told I would have to go private stock or artist to get it with the natural back, sides, and neck.

CoreyT
02-24-2013, 09:05 AM
They told me four months at the latest, but if Shawn said mine was being built, I have no idea how long it takes from start to finish.
Then when they ship it, it takes exactly seven days to get to my dealer.

The only thing the dealer will have to do is change out the 10s for 9s, then do a complete setup on it, then I can pick it up the following day.

This will be far the most expensive guitar I have ever bought :D

I feel even with it being the most expensive purchase, it's going to be well worth it. I'm going to keep the bigger gauge strings ( again a dead give away if said lol) . I used to play 12's and 13's and loved them. Heavier gauge don't bother me .

Congrats on your order, look forward to your NGD thread in a few months. Don't sweat whether there's a pic available on the PRAs website for the finish, if you specifically ordered it and that's what your sales people communicated to PRS, then that's all that matters IMHO.

Corey,

I believe that quilt may be an up charge from 10 top, maybe not. But it does have to be specified. 10 tops are flame unless you specify.

The antique natural is cool. I like the burst a bit better if that is the color you have settled on. Again, the burst needs to be specified. I don't think they decide one way or another for you. If you want the burst, you gotta tell them.

I'm anxious to see your new baby too. keep us posted!

CoreyT
02-25-2013, 08:58 AM
Thanks Ruger.
Which Burst?
http://www.prsguitars.com/408/colors.php

At this point, I do not want to ask for anymore changes, and I think it is being built now, at least I hope it is.
My dealer also told me most of the MT he asks for are usually what he would consider a 9.5 top.
I am hoping that is what I get.

I will for sure start a NGD thread once it arrives.
Hope to have my cabinet by then too so I can get some good pics of it up on top of it.
Cabinet should be worked on this week I think, the guy had a kitchen set to do before me.

Oh, I misread. I thought you ordered a 10 top. Your non-10 top will be flame. This is the burst I was thinking of:

But you have to imagine it as a flame top and not quilt.

That is pretty looking.
I just hope mine looks great.
I think the 10 top was a $400 option, not sure.

CoreyT

He he he...
I like the lighter colored back ever since I bought my son his SE Semi-Hollow Custom.

I just called my GAS dealer as his rep visited him last week, but the rep has not found out anything about my guitar.
I am going to assume it has not been built yet.
I do have some swag coming though from my dealer, some stuff that will look great on my wall.

If I do not have it by April, I will start worrying :D
Hopefully this one gets shipped to the correct store this time.
Never did find out if that music school back East with the same name as my dealer here in WA. state ever gave back the free SE Tremonti Custom they got back to PRS or not.

Hopefully you hear from your dealer soon.
Once he gets the bill, mine will be about a week out.

My dealer had the wrong contact at PRS, and thanks to Shawn I got the correct contacts for my dealer to inquire on the build schedule of my 408 MT.
It is suppose to ship on Monday the 15th of this month, and it usually takes seven days to get here, so it should land on the 22nd, and it will take them that day or the next morning when they open to set it up with 9 - 42s on it.
If it comes in as scheduled, I will take off work early the day it is ready :D

Lot of the guitars listed on the products page only have a place holder for the Antique Natural color on a guitar with a maple top, mine included under the 408 MT page.
I checked a few others today and found on the 245 page they had the color swab up, and also the 245 is shown in Antique Natural, same color mine is getting painted.

Hope your guitar arrives soon! I love natural or natural-burst finishes - with the kind of decent wood you get on a PRS it just looks so classy.

I recently picked up a 408 Standard in Frost Blue Metallic. I don't usually go for solid colour guitars but this just looks great. I'm loving the playability and varied tones (all great!) available from those pickups: truly an amazing guitar. The only thing I can ever imagine changing this for is the same model in the aforementioned natural/natural-burst or a private stock version should I ever win the lottery!

Hey Corey -

Looking back through this thread, it looks like you finally settled on the color and everything around 25 January. I placed my order for an Artist 408 about two weeks after that, and I was told a week ago that mine was scheduled to be done 12 April. However, my dealer informed me today that they encountered a "delay" (I didn't get any more info than that), and it's now scheduled for completion on 5 May. Perhaps this "delay" affected yours as well?

- Jason

Thanks Jason.
If mine indeed is sitting in setup, I am not sure how long they sit there.
Like are they hanging from the ceiling like on an assembly line, then the next one in line gets taken down, adjusted, cleaned, then sent to shipping?

If I get some serious gas down the road for a Tremonti, I will look into the dealers that advertise here that have a large inventory on hand.
Then the wait is like a week or less to get it to me.
My dealer only stocks a few Maryland guitars, and probably less than five SEs at a time.
Hence why I had to order all of my others with the exception of my sons SE Semi-Hollow Custom which they had two in stock.

Round trip Plane ticket to Maryland from Washington = $800?
Hotel for long weekend = $300?
Admission to 2013 PRS Experience, Touring the PRS factory, Having access to hundreds of Maryland made guitars, meeting a bunch of friendly fellow musicians, vendors, artists and PRS staff, getting the best deal possible on just about any PRS product available = PRICELESS

If you need a PRS fix before that I highly recommend Wild West Guitars in California, go to their website for a great selection of in stock models and call Doug Diamond at Wild West, he's taken great care of me on multiple occasions.

Shawn, can you snag a pic of it for us :D

Hey Corey, Im excited for your impending NGD, but I'm guessing Shawn has quite a bit on his plate and can't (read: really shouldnt be expected to) take pictures of forum members guitars. He doesn't do it for private stock let alone a regular production instrument where thousands come off the line each year.

Very tempting.
Maybe not this year, but for 2014.
I have been to Wild Wests site before, will have to check them out again, thanks.

Have you received any updates since your last check-in? I try not to pest my dealer, but the anticipation is killing me.

Now that 20 years of wishing and dreaming is about to become a reality for me, I've found that I've got the bug so badly that I'm already sorting out my next PRS before I've even laid eyes or hands on my first! My band does mostly acoustic rock shows, and we like to push the limits a little by trying to arrange actual rock songs on an acoustic. But playing guitar solos from 80's and 90's rock songs can get downright awful on an acoustic. I modded a Schecter with the LR Baggs piezo bridge and preamp, but it's crapped out on me and has just never sounded that great. To that end, I've got my eyes on the HB II, hoping to snag one of those sooner rather than later, as it'll become my primary gigging guitar alongside my koa Takamine! :D

No updates, I do not expect any from my dealer, so I am not going to bug him.
He will call me the day it comes in.

I have tried in the past checking with PRS Customer Service, but they have zero access to shipping details so they tell me.

I know what you mean about thinking about the next one while still waiting on the current one.

Still have no word on the guitar.
Dealer has sent in emails/texts on Monday with no answer back yet.
It would sure be nice to know if it has shipped or still sitting in the factory.

Meanwhile, here sits a gorgeous one with a 10 top setup just like the one I ordered with a tremolo and pattern thin neck carve, just not the color I ordered.

Hi Corey,

Have your dealer call the factory. The outside sales rep the dealer is contacting doesn't work at the factory and has no idea when or what has shipped. Have your dealer call the factory and speak to his inside sales guy. The inside sale person can give your dealer an ETA over the phone.

CoreyT

I have asked my dealer to call his inside sales guy and not the rep, but for some reason he only tries to get a hold of the latter.

OK, so I sent off an email to my dealer earlier this morning to ask him to please call his sales guy, and not the rep.
I just spoke with my dealer, but he has not opened up my email yet, but I told him he needs to call the sales guy, and he will in the morning since it is past 3 PM in Maryland now.
His rep called him today and said a guy told him my guitar is fantastic looking, and it should ship next week, and that it is still in the setup department.
Well we were told this two weeks ago too, so my dealer really needs to talk with the sales guy and not his rep.

If it does ship next week, I will not see it until mid May or so.
Dealer asked the rep if he had a pic of it, but since the rep is not there, of course not.

He got a hold of the sales guy and was told it is suppose to ship next Friday the 17th which means it will land Friday the 24th, then be available the 25th.

Not holding my breath though, as we were told twice it was suppose to have shipped by now.
He will call the 17th and see if he can wrangle a UPS tracking number then we will know for sure.

Hopefully yesterday, then he will get it next Thursday, and prep it with a fresh setup and 9's, and I can pick it up the next day, unless they get right on it, then I can pick it up after work.

CoreyT
05-17-2013, 05:55 PM
Thanks Brad.

A new setup is what my dealer does to all guitars that get sold in his shop before a customer takes it home.
Not that they do not trust PRS, but it is just something they do there from what he told me.
I even get a free setup down the road anytime I want to drop the guitar off for a few days with them.

Plus...I am not sure what gauge strings come on a 408.
Some Maryland built guitars come with 9s, some come with 10s.
I run 9s on all of my guitars, I just like them better, so if it is shipped with 10s, it is going to need a new setup anyways,

I wish PRS listed on their products page what gauge strings the guitars ship with.
Just about any other manufacturer in their specs section on their websites list that kind of info.

Thanks Tolm, this has been a very long waiting experience.
Good to know the setups hold well in transit.
Pretty sure my dealers techs (Jay or Tony, depending on who is working the day it comes in) will not have to do to much from switching from the stock 10s to my 9s.

Another thing, do the Maryland built guitars ship with a PRS sticker?

So I called my dealer this afternoon, once the ship date (+1 day for delivery, per my dealer) had passed. He called PRS, and called me back about 40 minutes later to tell me that it's now slated for "casing" on May 31st. So, no NGD for me. What's frustrating is that this is now the 4th time that the ship date has been pushed back and delayed. I mean, I get that things happen, quality over quantity, I ordered an Artist Package instrument, etc. But 4 times I've been given a date, and 4 times that date has come and gone, only to be replaced with another date further down the road.

Has anyone else had a similar experience when ordering a PRS guitar that wasn't readily in stock?

Patience, grasshopper!

There's a lot of hand work and inspection that goes on behind the scenes. Flaws get corrected. Adjustments are made. That takes time.

They don't just pop these out of an oven on an assembly line like donuts, wrap them in cellophane and ship them.

I've special ordered quite a few PRSes. I ordered a PS acoustic last September and I haven't a clue when it will be done. I would never bug my dealer; whenever it gets here, it'll be a good day!

All the phone calls and posts aren't going to make yours happen faster.

I'm not looking to accelerate the process. I get that it takes time, and I'm okay with that because I know I'm going to get a killer product. What I would appreciate, though, is information.

When a consumer purchases a product and is given an expected delivery date for that product by the manufacturer, it's not unreasonable for the consumer to harbor some level of expectation that the product will be delivered on or around that date. Yes, those dates are often estimates. And yes, those dates can and will slide if defects or other issues surface during manufacture and production (especially at a company with extremely rigid QC, such as PRS). However, when that quoted date does come and go, especially 4 times, it's not unreasonable for the consumer to inquire as to what's going on. So far, the best we've been able to get was a tidbit of information after delay #2, which was simply "there was a delay".

I'm not saying that I expect or I'm entitled to detailed step-by-step updates. I'm merely making the assertion that if a delivery date is provided, and no product is delivered by that date, it's reasonable for the customer to want to know what's happening. As big of a PRS fan as I am, and as understanding as I am regarding the process of making these awesome instruments, at the end of the day I'm still a consumer who's been given 4 delivery dates that have now come and gone. I don't feel unjustified in wondering what happened.

I don't feel unjustified in wondering what happened.

I always get antsy about a new guitar in the same way I do about a new woman... sometimes talking about it helps ease the suffering of anticipation, but in the end.. it takes as long s it's supposed too.. and if it's meant to be? That eventually becomes a big part of the enjoyment process..... A brother has got to be able to talk about it to his boys.

Guy's, we are not expecting a blow by blow detailed "where is the guitar on the assembly line right now" kind of information, just confirmation of shipment.
Mine too has been slipped back three times, and if it did not go out last Friday like my dealer was told it did, then mine too has missed shipment four times now.

Yes, we can get antsy about it after several months, some of us put down some considerable coin as a down payment on these with our dealers.
The dealers are pretty much left in the dark though on shipments, and often their inquiries to their PRS contacts can go unanswered.
The best thing that can happen is that the dealer be emailed a UPS tracking number since all shipments that leave shipping have one on the shipping box.

I am waiting until Friday afternoon to call my dealer to see if mine came in or not.

You probably think I'm picking on you. I'm really not into doing that.

If, as you say, you're ok with the process, and how things get delayed, and you want a super guitar, then you have to remember:

Their focus is building great guitars. They have their hands full just doing that. It's actually a small company that isn't equipped to provide this kind of information direct to consumers, their customers are their dealers.

I know it takes a lot of patience to wait, so what I try to do is just put it out of my mind until my dealer calls.

I have two on order. I get how it's hard to wait.

John Beef

I special ordered a guitar once (different manufacturer) and remember all these emotions, the "trying to be patient after several delays but dammit so much I have been waiting and how long does it take anyway?" It's not fun at all. What's worse is the guitar that arrived was exactly to spec but did not meet my expectations.

While I did sell that guitar for a loss, I took the remaining money down to my local shops and played a crapload of guitars - and ended up with my 1st PRS, which I still have 6 and a half years later.

I guess the point of my rambling story is that it all works out in the end.

No worries, Les. I don't feel like you're picking on me. And I'm not angry or upset about any of this. I get it. And I'm okay with it. As other posters have noted, I'm just antsy about it. This is a huge deal to me, as I'm sure it was for many, many other folks here the first time they took the plunge. I decided at about age 20 that I had to have one of these instruments. And when I make a decision to do something, I don't act until I know for certain that I can accomplish my goal on my terms. I've worked my @$$ off for over the past 15 years to get myself in a position to where I could finally purchase, on my terms, the guitar that I wanted. I fell in love with the Private Stock Signature Limited that was the first to feature the 408 pickups. But there's no way I could afford one. My dealer told me to be patient, because he was pretty certain that in short order they'd make a production model. He was right, and I've trusted him and his judgment ever since. But the delivery of this guitar is, quite literally, the culmination of half a lifetime's hard work and dreams. No, that's not hyperbole. I'm sure there are plenty of other folks 'round these parts who can empathize.

It's all about perspective. I'm sure after another 10-15 years of life under my belt, my third or fourth PRS, and my first Private Stock, my perspective will be vastly changed. I guess what's doubly frustrating is that I make a living solving problems, fixing processes, and improving things. And I see ways that this process could be improved, as I'm sure countless others have as well. That's not a knock against PRS; but nothing is perfect. I wouldn't have set my sights on the creme de la creme if I wasn't absolutely convinced that it is, far and away, a superior product. I have no doubts that this guitar is going to blow me away, and exceed any expectations I might have for it. And I understand the wholesaler/retailer difference. As much as I would love to drive over to Stevensville and pick it up myself, I understand how this all works. I can't help but look at it through the consulting lens. Had I ordered any other product from any other company, and had a similar experience, I'd be just as curious as to what has caused the delays. The anxiety is just amplified because of what this particular purchase represents for me.

I just needed to vent. That's it and that's all. I'm not a Tom Petty fan, but he said it best: "The waaii-aaaiii-ting is the haaaaaaaaaar-dest paaaaaaaaaart."

I made that my new ringtone last week.
I knew it would be my dealer before I even answered it :D

Got up from the table and everyone else knew what was going on too.
Dealer told me he got an email from his sales guy just prior to him calling me with the tracking number.
Now that was not to hard to provide a tracking number 'eh?
A little late though, because when he plugged in the tracking number it said the 408 was out for local delivery for today.

http://i2.glitter-graphics.org/pub/221/221792fjdradop7s.gif

I get off work in an hour from now, and he may just be getting the guitar right now as I type this, so they will not have enough time to switch it over to the thinner Cobalts and readjust it for me.
I have tomorrow off for a four day weekend, so I will swing by at 10 am tomorrow when they open.

I had a good feeling that it shipped a day early last week when they sent out the invoice, seven days from last Thursday comes out to today.

Pics a comin' tomorrow late in the afternoon in a new thread.
Finally, the wait is over.
Getting very excited to compare it to my 2012 SE Custom 24.
I like how the knob controls reside in a recessed whole on the Maryland built guitars, and it will be nice to compare how this 408 compares to its South Korean cousins.
From watching the series of how the guitars are built, it looks like the contours on the sides are cut deeper too than the SEs I am use to.

After playing the SE Santana, my youngest son's 2012 SE Semi-Hollow, my 2012 Custom 24, and lastly the 2012 SE Tremonti Custom, I have come to the conclusion they are just as nicely built as the Gibson, and even play actually better.
The SG has a very long neck, but very thin like I like, but the SEs are much easier to me to play.

Having never played a USA built PRS yet, I am hoping to get blown away by it since the SEs play so nice.

Oh, wow! A USA PRS is like making love to a beautiful woman who loves you. SEs are like going solo, while other brands don't even get you where you want to go. Sometimes you just gotta rub one out and you're on your way, and it's fine and dandy, but it's never a true substitute for that beautiful lady in your bed.

Mods - I hope this is PG enough, I had some other ideas that were more of an R rated thing.

Hey Corey. Did I read that right? You've never played a US PRS? Not even in a store? Oh wow. You are going to be blown away.

Thanks John.

Egads, yep, never played a USA one.
My dealer has a few in stock that I saw in January the last time I was in there to put down my deposit, but I never played one.
Was kind of a hurry then.

Dealer called me on my way home from work, says it looks very nice, and it will be ready when I drop by first thing when they open up tomorrow morning.
Getting prepared to be blown away.

Congrats in advance, I know you're gonna love it.

The 408s by the way...just great pickups. But the guitars themselves are magic!

I'm sure there are plenty of other folks 'round these parts who can empathize

Oh yes, and I'm one of them.

Getting something you've wanted and worked hard to get is a wonderful thing, one of life's pleasures. And waiting is hard. Definitely!

When you're in the music business (as I am) you never know the future, and a PRS is a sizable investment. But when it comes, a special day happens. I wish you the best with yours.

Well, five hours to go :D
Slept OK, just glad I decided to take today off.
Nothing like a four dayer to catch up on some playing.

Wow this day is huge for you! I can definitely empathize with your situation and want to congratulate you on your hard work. I've also recently found myself in a position to purchase some newer nicer gear from the work I've done for the past 15 years. I know how it feels bro and I'm super excited for your upcoming weekend!

I know you'll let us know how it goes...
