Don't let the title of the thread fool ya - this ignominious competition is open to actresses too...

My nominee for the all time worst actor:

Nicholas Cage.

A rock could out-act him.

Acting is a difficult profession. I wouldn't want to do it. Just learning the skills is difficult enough, and then there are cattle call auditions, the "you're great but the wrong look for the part," the necessity of being stuck with the direction you're given, and often difficult scripts that make you look worse.

If you're a musician, you can always gig on some level; if you're a visual artist, you can create the work on your own terms. Same with a writer. Even a poet (the least popular of all these) can write without having to find a gig. But an actor? Unless you like doing one-person shows with no audience except your mom, man, that's a tough one. Because you need to find someone who'll put you on a stage.

My feeling is that you almost have to be crazy-ambitious to even get noticed.

So I don't bother criticizing the ones who've somehow managed to run that gauntlet. More power to them, as far as I'm concerned!

Sure, some do a better job with certain parts than others, but...just persevering as a working actor is a very, very difficult thing. I'm friends with some actors who have appeared in successful plays and movies, lots of TV, and when they tell me about their lives, it seems like it's all anxiety and "will my agent EVER call me again?"

Plus, as you know from your own gigs, everyone and his brother is a critic!

If Nicholas Cage and Keanu Reeves starred in a movie it would be considered and Over Drama! Cage in Con-Air was the worst acting job ever. Only a few of his movies have I ever enjoyed (Knowing, Family Man) but even in those he over acted. I would add Johnny Deep, even though at times he is brilliant, in the Pirate movies he is so frickin annoying. I actually think that he became such a good actor it became boring to him so he started going over the top to keep it interesting to him!

I've seen plenty great actors put in terrible performances in certain films. No one comes to mind at the moment. Some of the worst performances turn up on TV dramas and soap operas. With a good actor I shouldn't know they're acting.

and then there are cattle call auditions

Ironic since a guernsey could out-act Nicholas Cage on any given day....

Like any calling or endeavor, there will be good ones and bad ones. The bad ones really should be looking for other work. As for critics - I never listen to them. I plunk down my money for my own enjoyment, not because some professional critic told me what to like or dislike.

Mike has it right - really good actors make you get lost in their roles. You get suspension of disbelief. The bad ones make you want your money back. I figure Nicholas Cage owes me at least $75.....

edit: I just Googled memorable quotes from "Gone in 60 Seconds" and the screen just went totally blank - had to reboot.

Well, if you're Nicholas Cage and they're paying you what they're paying him, you're not going to quit your acting job and look for work any time soon! ;)

I sadly agree with you. And that is what makes everything work, isn't it? I feel a turnip can out-act Nicholas Cage, yet there are so, so many who disagree with me.

Question: Why doesn't Nicholas Cage order salad at dinner?
Answer: The lettuce upstages him.

Mary Louise Parker. I swear all she does is open her eyes really wide. Zoey Deschanel, better than hearing her sing though.

I hate to publicly disparage anyone, but I got a parking ticket today so I am mad at the world.

I'm sure they are really great people.

There's a funny story in the Sonic Youth biography Goodbye 20th Century where Thurston Moore is hired to play Keanu Reeves' birthday party....and he was supposed to set up in the middle of an ice skating rink. He's in the middle of a rink playing pretty tough music with Sofia Coppola, Brad Pitt and others ice skating circles around him. Gets a ride home from Keanu after the show because his ride ditched him.

Has to be up there in the list of most bizarre/surreal gigs.

It's hard to pick a bad actor, because everyone has a terrible performance. There is a lot of blame to go around from directors who give bad direction and editors that pick the worst possible take out of all of them. However, I can tell you what my favorite worst line in a movie delivered in the worst way is.

"Is it true, Mr. President, that there are some in your administration that believe that not even the Messiah will save us?"
Crummy line, crummy delivery with an odd beat in a whiny tone. Thanks, Tea Leoni.

William Shatner is very bad, but was smart enough to make a career of it.

I would like to see Ron Livingston play Charlie Sheen on Two and One half men. Or Jon Hamm play Kevin Sorbo..Or Ted Nugent Play Aileen Wournos.
