View Full Version : How cold it is where you are?

I'm in Phoenix, AZ. Normally January is when we get to gloat in 65 degree sunny weather while the rest of the country is shoveling their sidewalks. It makes up for those 115 degree days in July we suffer through.

However, in 15 years of living here I have never seen what I saw yesterday. I went for a run around 4:30pm and I saw ice in the concrete gutter on the side of the road. I have seen ice a few times, and it even snowed once (didn't stick or anything) but NEVER have I seen ice in the street at 4:30 in the afternoon. I know this would be common elsewhere. Not Phoenix!

It's been in the mid 20s every morning the last 3 or 4 mornings. We have two citrus plants, a lemon tree and an unknown tree in the front that's too small for fruit at this point. I'm pretty sure the small one is going to die completely. The other one will need serious pruning and probably won't grow lemons for two years. I picked maybe a third of what was out there on the tree, about three paper grocery bags' worth, before this cold hit. The rest are probably ruined. If the fruit freezes, the ice crystals that form tear up the membranes inside the fruit, so if you cut into it you just get mush.

To make matters worse, the heat boiler in my workplace blew up last week, so we still have no heat.

Here in North GA, we're staying a nice comfy mid-50's under a big blanket of rain clouds and fog. It's been a very mild winter so far with just a few dips into the low 30's/upper 20's so far. We had a high 73 degrees on Saturday!

Yep you're right, we're closer to Antartica/further away from the equator so it's generally cooler here than on the mainland (you even used the right term, "mainland"!). We had a crazy heatwave here last week, it was hot everywhere in the country (hottest on record). Climate scientists are saying it's a result of global warming, but that's a whole other thread that shouldn't be started!

Probably can't talk about the extinction of the Tasmanian Tiger without getting political either, but I always found this to be one of the most unusual and exotic animals known to man.

Yeah, I had friends in Adelaide (I lived there for two years) reporting 47 degrees last week! I did have the displeasure to experience 46 when I was there. An extra degree certainly wouldn't be welcome.

Now the forecast says we're supposed to get snow tomorrow afternoon.

it has been around -15C to -20C the last few days, toss in the wind chill factor and easy -30C

Today a bit warmer at -11C with wind chill -18C. There are snow banks here taller then I am and for us its only early winter yet. Another 15cm on the way tonight on our side, east coast of newfoundland tonight is getting another 30cm

On the 11th of Jan there was a big storm on the island. For the first time in the near 40 years I have been here we lost power for 12 hours. Thats a big problem when its cold like this. Most newer home are all electric heat so we get in trouble with no power. I think the east coast got 50cm with 110kph winds that night.

For us here, its common to get 5 to 10cm of snow per day, and 100kph winds are very common these days for some reason. Our winter start usually last week of October but nothing really stays on the ground until December. Late Dec to early March its just constant snow everyday. Around here you need a Honda snowblower if your in the higher area's and expect to use it 2-3 times per snowy day

We got rainfall for four days in a row here. That's unheard of for Phoenix. We even set a record on Saturday, 1.06 inches of rain, shattering the record of .43 inches for that day. It's been colder, highs in the 50s, but by the weekend it'll be sunny and mid 70s again.

I looked up the totals, and over the 4 days of wet weather, we got 1.77 inches of rain at the sensor about 2 miles from my house. To put that in perspective, Phoenix usually TOTALS around 8 inches per year. So we got roughly 20% of our yearly rainfall this past weekend.

Similar story in WI. 55 outside right now with thunderstorms earlier this morning . 3-6 inches of snow tomorrow. Then negative temperatures with wind chills up to -25F on Thursday. All we are missing is 80+ degrees and sunny this week. Otherwise, WI would have had a taste of all four seasons in one week.
