We have a few before and after photos scattered in various threads. I'd like to collect some in one place. I'll start.

Does anybody else miss the wood library era?
http://mrpetesays.com/music/images/CK_BluegrassWoodToGuitar.JPG

Remember when fingerboards were just a boring chunk of wood to stick some frets and an inlay on?

I love how in that second pic there's some figuring inthe wood that looks a little like the 12th fret bird. And where does it end up once it's a finished fretboard? 12th fret! That is cool!

I was able to choose the top for my PS Sig #37/100, and asked Tina and Paul to find me some similar wood to that used on Paul Reed Smith and Myles Kennedy's guitars. They sent me this blank:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r267/junkacct/Guitar%20stuff/topA.jpg

Which was a pretty good match to what I was after:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r267/junkacct/Guitar%20stuff/Sig_ltd_comparison.jpg

The guitar turned out pretty good ;)

Yes it worked out quite well. That placement was by design - we drew the fingerboard outline on the blank.

Great thread idea Mr. Pete.
Here are my offerings.
Mainly top based because I really love seeing how a certain top takes a color.

Love those TGS WL guitars.

Thanks Les - to my eyes I've not seen a better looking guitar. I adore it, and it's got a proper loud and thick rock tone. It's awesome.

I know there are more out there. While you dig them out to post, here is the top that goes with the finger board in the first post.
I don't know how or why somebody decided to try and make a guitar out of rotting wood, but I like the look.

The grain in the rosewood family isn't as tight and regular as the maple we are used to seeing. It moves a lot even with a little bit of a carve. They do warn you in the vault that this will happen. Here is another example. This top is rosewood (vs. Markie's Cocobolo).

Thanks for the complement!

Really came out great, exceeded expectations. Vintagey top, lots of cross grain and flecks, two distinct shades of green with bits of natural wood tones peeking through.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/--bHNyx-8RkM/UCWjZ0nkBxI/AAAAAAAACQs/9RqZPcFB_y8/s912/PS%2520DC%2520245%25206.jpg

With the Amber knobs to also pull out the browns, and the "Glow" finish sanded to a lighter set of tones in the middle, makes for a very classy vintage looking guitar despite the more modern color.

My masterpiece!! ;)

A small crack in the Nitro. No worries, it happens. I am glad it was caught before shipment, I don't know if I would have been able to let it out of my hands had it arrived here with me! :D

As awesome as this one is (I love dark figured wood) why is the finished guitar not matched down the centre as in the first pic?

I'm a little late to the party but here is my take:

The problem which has been a huge gripe with myself and PRS is that gap in the middle while the top and bottom of the board are touching. When they run the wood through the joiner to level the edges, by taking off the points that used to touch it throws the boards out of alignment. It happens every time there is a gap like that no matter what the type of wood. Yes there is some change due the top carve but this is even more a factor.

It seems to me that if they would run the boards through the joiner before the boards are split for the book match this problem would be greatly resolved.

I was supposed to ask Paul this question durimg the Birds And Moons question session at the 2011 Experience which I missed due to being in the emergency room with a kidney stone.

Ron:

Thanks for that explanation! I have been wondering that for years, why these beautiful tops on 10-Top, Artist Top, Wood Library Run and Private Stock Guitars aren't book-matched better. BrianC and I have discussed at length in my journey of owning 50+ PRSi over the past 4 years.

Maybe that's why I have developed such a serious affection for Private Stocks with one-piece quilt tops!! ;)

Thanks!

It is Aquamarine, but with a extra wash coat to lighten it up a bit. Aquamarine is mostly blue but has a little green in it, which comes out a touch more when you lighten it either with the extra wash coat, or via sanding.

I dig it!

Here are some other varieties of the same color family that are done with sanding, FYI:

I just noticed the pickup cavities - 408's, very nice!

Of the 4 I have spec'ed, I have the one inbound with 408's. I really dig 408's, want to spec another one with them, but I keep chickening out in spec'ing them into more Private Stock's at time of spec'ing them, LOL. It just seems so permanent to not be able to change later. That being said, I hardly ever actually do change pickups, so what am I worried about?... ;)

On these last two I did uncovered Zebra 5708's on one and uncovered Zebra 5909's on the other. I guess I was in a Zebra mood last week! :D

Incoming Amethyst SC has uncovered black 5909's.

But all three guitars mentioned with 5708's/5909's have Sig Switching, I dig the two micro-toggles for that versus the push-pull on the tone knob. Also you get some cool tones with both pickups on and one split one full, with the 408's and in the past with 5909's I had in an SC Ted with two push-pulls, wanted to have that flexibility on these.

Yep. I've put 408's on 2 and 57/08's on 2.

I have 59/09's in my TGS #2. Love that guitar.

Maybe I will do something different next time around.

Got to gifts today. unwrapped the 1st & it was a "Woody" character (guy) from Toy Story. My youngest Grandson trotted off with it in hand. Opened the 2nd package. Same exact thing. The older Grandson trotted off with it!

Then I went to see "The Great OZ" movie with the older Grandson....... Good times

Markie, that is too stunning for words. Wow. Can we see the front?

I could be wrong, but isn't that a one-piece body if flame maple?
Looking at the side grain, I see no indication that it has a separate front and back?
How's the the tone of that thing? Do tell? First I've ever seen with a solid maple body

Just had a thought, wouldn't it be cool to see some of these guitars birthed out of drift/reclaimed wood? Unless some of this wood has been cleaned and sanded down already, it will be great to see a Cinderella transformation. From coal to diamond, or in this case, from 'charcoal' to charcoal burst :top:

edit: found out about Graphite color.

Does the Graphite color look silver-ish in real light?

The pink ivory tree was right next to the BRW tree in my dad's yard (both very small). In the backyard was a ziracote tree which the power company trimmed back and killed. My dad passed on 5 years ago, and we sold the property. I don't imagine any of those trees are still alive. :-(

See, I come by this insanity through genetics.

Been playing this one the last few days. Great guitar (love the neck). Big thanks to Mr. Miles for his good eye (and knowing what I like) on this maple. Don't think Mr. Smith was a big fan of the color, though.

I think its a Hipshot unit. I wanted a 305 with through body stringing like a Fender.

I feel compelled to add a teaser while we are waiting for the new batch of Brazilians to find their way home.
We didn't have a template for the Santana headstock handy when drawing on the rosewood.
