View Full Version : The 2013 Winter NAMM Thread

I usually post 300-400 photos from each Winter NAMM show (in Anaheim, California) and have done so over the last 3 or 4 years. But I'm not there this year.

So... those of us stuck at home are counting on all of you at NAMM to post your photos and videos here! And as often as you can.

In return we will envy you, "ooooh" and "ahhhh", and generally wish we were you for the entire weekend.

As a long time fan of the brand and Paul in general, EXTREMELY excited to see this announcement about the PRS core bass finally happening. When Gary said that it was coming soon at ExPRS this year I wasnt sure how soon that was. My pocketbook however will be anxious to see the pricing for the various spec levels...might have to start selling off gear. Hopefully we can get some play testing videos on the PRS youtube or from some attendees.

Check out this cool cable with kill switch in it.
Quite different than other cables that have the slide built in that cut out the pop when you insert/pull the cable.
It also allows you to make it act like turning your volume control off/on.

Another one, I did not realize Randall Amps was still around.
I was gigging with them back in '72.
If anyone here is familiar with West Seattle, there was a music store (name escapes me now) next to Admiral Theater that carried them, and they often loaned them to me and the group I was with back then for free to try out :D

Randall has been around and kicking in the metal world - but over the last decade their reputation has gone to **** in regards to both tone and product build quality.

Much like PRS did with picking up someone with experience (Doug Sewellllllllll), Randall hired Mike Fortin of Fortin Amps who is a legend in the hi gain amp world. They revamped the whole line and everyone is excited again. Not for nothing, but that amp they demoed in the video sounds reallllllllly good. Mean and agreesive yet pretty darn balanced!

I had one of the RM50 Egnater designed MTS amps for a few years and it was a very cool amp. I really dug it. I don't know why more people didn't catch on to that design. They had all these artist sig preamps available which were all metal guys, but the non-sig preamps ran the gamut of tones from tweed to SLO.

Well - I didn't take many pictures this year. It was crazy crowded and any time you stopped, there would be a traffic jam. I only took pics of the PRSi with the birds carved in them. I will get them up as soon as I can.

The PRS booth was crowded all day. My buddy that I went with fell in love with the PRS 4-string bass and is ordering one. I didn't buy anything other than a G7 capo. I did get to do some cool stuff this year though. I got to go to the TEC awards and see Pete Townsend get the Les Paul award and I got to go to the VIP Reception before the show and the reception after the show. I got to go to a benefit concert that featured some jazz artists I had never heard of, but they were incredible and it was a "sit in and jam" kind of thing where several of the musicians playing together had never even met.

I finally played a Taylor acoustic (two of them actually) that I liked, but the price point was around $12k...Markie and Phenny introduced me to those. I got to see the ever elusive TImmy Walls for a few minutes...

The rest of the time I spent wondering around playing guitars, listening to demos of cool gear.

I had an absolute blast this year...I am already looking forward to next year.

The bass you are talking about was the orange one right? It was made for Larry who was touring bass for Davy Knowles & The PRS Band at the time. I think Simon McBride was playing it during the jam at Experience.

Did you watch the demo? The mute is mechanical and has a spring, so you can do killswitch stutters. Other cables I have seen with silent switches were not responsive enough to do anything like this.

Yep, I was all set to install a killswitch on my Fernandes, ordered an arcade button from Hong Kong. But I want to try this first, not sure if the placement will be ideal for accessing it quickly though. May be tough to pick a note and move your hand to the input jack and find that tiny button. We'll see, I placed an order a few days ago. Some may find stutters kitschy, but I love being able to sim a pattern gate or pattern trem on the fly, instead of always relying on your pre-programmed patterns. Sometimes organic and spontaneous is fun.

I hope that they do make a wrap around bridge version of the JA15. I would imagine that there would be a significant tone difference due to the location change of the wood block that normally sits under the stop tail of the two piece bridge. A wrap around bridge version might also have the mohagany block running the through the body. This might be more 335 like. I would definitely want this version.

Hi,

I shot some video at NAMM and am in the process of posting it to YouTube. You can see the first couple here:

and here:

I bought a DGT in December so I was really excited to see David Grissom. I also shot some video of Gary Grainger demo'ing his bass and of PRSh's band. I'll post those in the next day or so.

Some may find stutters kitschy, but I love being able to sim a pattern gate or pattern trem on the fly, instead of always relying on your pre-programmed patterns. Sometimes organic and spontaneous is fun.

Me too! Stutter, or as I like to call 'em "Sour" switches are standard mods on all of my guitars. I take out the tone control and put a mini switch in its place.

Good to see you too man!! It was literally a flying visit!!
