View Full Version : Two guitars at PTC for me

hippietim

The PTC gang is going to work their magic on a couple guitars for me. A hard tail SAS is already on the way direct from the person I bought it from and my NF3 is leaving tonight.

Does anyone care to guess what they're doing to them?

Heh, there will actually be fewer options :)

OK. Now I have to watch what happens. I was thinking of changing the push pull on my SAS so that it was just an on/off for the middle rail allowing me to engage the pickups in any combination. But then the signature switching got me thinking of using mini toggles to switch the neck and bridge between humbuckers and single coil - but I didn't really want to add more switches.

I will play!

Ok, my guess: you are donating the "organs" from the SAS to the NF3. I say this because the NF, with the longer scale, is more of a strat platform. From there, you are adding either a Floyd or filling in the trem cavity and doing a hardtail. Might be wayyyy off....but that is my guess!

I have been most curious about installing the NF in the neck of the SAS. On a SASNF, since the pickup rout is not set as deep into the body, they had to have a little extra wood on the back. Like this:

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j240/wyomingta/Guitars/722_SmokeBurst-4.jpg

So, what's the PTC going to do to allow the neck to be properly mounted with enough support, yet still fill in the gap on the front remaining from converting from a full size humbucker to a NF?

The NF3 arrived on Monday. I barely had a chance to pull it out of the case - I gave it a quick look over and it looked like the PTC did a great job.

I finally got to play with it tonight. I changed the strings and tweaked the setup - felt great! I plugged it into my rig and this thing kills! The Floyd and other changes really brought this guitar to life. The neck pickup is about as Strat like as I could hope for. The middle position has this very unique tone - it's got the hollowness you'd expect from an in-between position but it still remains very full. The 5909 in the bridge is great - notes ring very clear even with higher gain settings. It really is a blast to play! So far I'm very happy!

Thanks Skitchy, Shawn, and the rest of the PTC crew!

Extra rigidity at the top of the rout, where the neck attaches???

According to Skitchy, it was easy to block the bridge pickup with wood, but he needed more control over the cavity for the neck pickup. Because the tongue of the neck doesn't sit flat in the pickup cavity, he used epoxy so that it would ooze into each little crevice assuring no gaps.

I took me a day or two for this to sink in correctly. At first I thought, why wouldn't the neck sit flat against the wood? Wouldn't it do that when bolted in? Then I realized you were talking about the top part of the tongue not sitting flat with the rest of the wood, like if you've got no pickup in there and you're looking into the rout, the neck wouldn't be flat with the rest of the rout.

Wasn't the decision to make it a set neck a function of the geometry of having a NF mounted in there instead of a full size humbucker? I've noticed the other NF SASes have a little round lip that sticks out under the heel that I assumed was all about giving the neck a little more wood to sit on, and giving the bolt on back plates the ability to move just a little bit toward the neck since the rout for the pickup didn't give the neck as much real estate to grab on to.

Geez, if that makes sense at all. I'm sorry, I'm nearly braindead after a very hard day at work. It's beer o'clock.

Shawn@PRS
03-06-2013, 05:25 PM
The tongue of the neck goes beyond the area covered by the pickup now, so we have to fill that area or else there would be a big gap near the pickup. When we filled that area it made a set neck guitar.

We ovoid the gap issue on the Narrrowfield models by adjusting the neckjoint. Look at the design of the NF3 neckjoint and then look at the neckjoint of a Custom, they are vastly different.

Shawn@PRS
04-08-2013, 09:10 AM
I sent these to Tim, so I hope he doesn't mind me sharing them.

This started out as a Swamp Ash. We filled the middle pickup cavity and routed the guitar for Narrowfield pups. The opaque color he chose needs a primer coat and this is where we sit today. Even though the neck has now been epoxied in, the neck plate shows the serial number, so it will be re-installed on the guitar.

Before and After. That's a bad ass piece of craftsmanship if I say so myself. Nice job PTC crew!

Some serious modifications here. Turned out glorious. Well done PTC and congrats Tim.

Love it! ...except for one thing... you've got this guitar that looks brand spankin' new and a crusty old bridge on there.

Hey Tim,

Have you had a chance to spend any time with this yet? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

What a cool idea.

Hey Tim,

I got to play with it for about a half hour on Saturday. It sounds great. The neck feels amazing. The guitar is gorgeous in person. The finish is fantastic.

It's pretty difficult to play for me since you guys strung it with some sort of cable designed to tow a 50 foot boat trailer :) I'm in Seattle this week, when I get back I'll restring it with some strings my 47 year old hands can manage a little easier and report back.

From someone with a guitar at the PTC at the moment, it's really cool to see them turn out so well!

Love the direction you went with both guitars Tim. They turned out great!

I played the SAS w/dual NF pickups last Saturday at a gig. The guitar played and sounded great! It cut like a Tele on the bridge and had a nice fat P90 tone on the neck.

My only beef with the guitar has nothing to do with the PTC - I don't like the pearl inlay - it's really hard to see the dots on a maple neck. Before the gig I took a black Sharpie and "fixed" the side dots.

Oh, and I got to test out the bonus feature that Skitchy did - the push/pull pot bypasses the pots and switches and delivers the raw bridge pickup - very handy!

Came out fantastic.
