View Full Version : Paul's personal guitar(s)?

How many has he had? I'm not talking about his personal collection (I am assuming he has one). I'm just talking his number one.

I first visited the factory back in the original PRS forum days, before it morphed into the Gear page, during the second forum event/gathering at the factory. Paul carried a yellow Dragon I around in a PRS gig bag, and it was about the only thing you ever saw him play/gig. Later he played a charcoal MEI stoptail for a while.

What other number one's has Paul had, and what is his current number one?

He seems to keep getting talked into selling his personal guitars! His personal models as of late have been PS Signatures with pernambuco necks, either with 'regular' 408s or with a narrow 408 in both the bridge and neck positions (as per the new Paul's Guitar model).

He does not keep a collection.
My understanding is that he never has more than two: the last number one and what might be the next one.

Casual observation suggests that he keep the really good ones a small number of years.

I know Davey Knowles got one of Pauls #1s too! You can see it in the header graphic on the forum.

Still on topic but in a little different direction, how many guitars has he taken with him on sales calls over the years? Does he make a new one every year or every time a new model comes out? Are the older ones sold off after a year or so? Does anyone know about the sales call guitars?

The traveling road show won't consist only of 'Paul's' guitar(s). He takes his to play with the band, but may demonstrate, or have someone else demonstrate other guitars. I have no idea how long a guitar will stay in the traveling rotation, but I get the impression that they get purchased fairly quickly.

I also feel this is the case.

Yes, I have been to one of the road shows at Fat Sound Guitars and DG pulled a DGT off the rack and played that. Paul also played a stock ME when it was his turn. I ask because I have one that was once his. I saw an interesting ad on CL once a few states away. It was a Cu22, no case, and a little wear. The price was good for a quilted Cu22 with birds. So I buy it and get it shipped to me. I open the case (I sent him one to ship it back to me in) and there is this beautiful AmberBurst quilted Cu22 with a Brazillian Roswood neck with Paua inlay birds and headstock signature! I pull the pup and look for the MODCAT to get the details ... not there. Just a handwritten note on the sticker in the cavity that said "See Paul". I emailed PRS and asked Matt about the guitar giving him the serial number. His response was that the guitar did not have a MODCAT because it was made for PRSH to take to sales calls and was not in production so it did not have a MODCAT.

So I was wondering how many of these there are, and how long it may have been in service traveling with Paul. It is a 2007. It's the one in the avatar.

I was wondering what happened to that yellow dragon that was his main guitar back in the day. I don't remember seeing it in the archives at the factory. Perhaps in his office or home. It must have some level of special- ness to him.

I was at a clinic in Seattle when Paul had that yellow dragon. He didn't make any kind of big deal out of it, just handed to the nearest guy in the audience and said "pass it around." That was before I knew Paul was just that kind of guy, so I was trippin' a little bit that he would do that. When that sacred relic ;) made it around to me, I got a good look at it, and it had clearly been played a lot.

I felt the same at that forum event years ago - Paul not only had the Dragon with him, but it was in a gig bag (!), no case... and he got it out and just handed it into the crowd to pass around... blew my mind at the time.

This begs the question: who is playing the guitar in the header?

The 1st fret inlay is the only way I can tell it's Davey's guitar.

The flame pattern just under the player's right arm in the forum header seems to match Ellie in the pic I posted.

Anyone know Paul to have a production guitar turn in to his #1... or are they all PS?

Well, technically, both the Dragon I and Modern Eagle 1 were production models...

He did the same thing with his personal guitar at a CT in-store appearance. He goofed on me for taking my picture with his guitar....

Why not a gig bag? Not like Paul's guitar is getting tossed around in the back of a band truck, ya know? And if anything happens to it, he can get it repaired easily enough or just build another. I carry my PS and Collection guitars around in a gig bag a lot of the time.

I remember that guitar well. I used to go to NAMM shows to work in the Klein Electric guitars booth. A couple of times we shared the booth with Budda amps, back in their early days. One show, Paul came up with the Dragon guitar to check out a Budda amp. (which after the show became mine) It sounded great! I remember telling Paul, "if you made production guitars that sounded like THAT, I'd still be playing your guitars." He later told me that the Modern Eagle was based on that guitar.

Why not a gig bag? Exactly!

After that event, I bought three PRS gig bags, that I've been using ever since. All of my hard cases are in boxes in the attic.

I have the one Paul played for part of 2012. I think it was a prototype for the new Paul's Guitar, as well maybe the Collection VI. He brought it to a PRS night last fall at Brian's Guitars in Connecticut and after hearing it I took an interest in it. After several weeks Paul gave in and it was mine. Mine also has a penny neck and the narrow bridge P/U.

Very cool sounding guitar.

To quote Jimmy Buffet, I haven't a clue. But, after seeing a number of Paul's former guitars, much like Donald Trump's wives, there are common traits. Amber stain, nice flame tops, stop tails, etc (I'm referring to the guitars, not the blonds).

And yes, Paul toted this one around in a beat up SE gig bag. Kinda like hiding it in plain sight.

I had a bundle of help scoring this one. Talk about a bunch of enablers :>)

Here is the closest photo I have. I did read a while back that Paul's favorite top wood was Eastern Flame maple w/ a tight flame pattern.

OK, OK, my work computer clearly does not like my visiting this forum.

Photo of my Paul's 408 top. Yeah, I still think of it as 'his'.

So, eastern, european, firewood? What did Paul pick for this one?

Looks like European Maple to me but the growth rings aren't quite as close together as I've seen in the past so I'm not 100%.
