I guess I'm one of the millions of Gen X'ers that wants to relive the glory days of the mid-80's. Santa Cruz has released reissues of some of the Rob Roskopp decks. Still haven't seen one like the one I had but when I do, it's on like Donkey Kong. Mine was like the 3rd one from left but the color of the target & beast matched the 2nd from left.

http://easyloungin.com/forum/topic.php?bb_attachments=323226&bbat=21993&inline

Back in the day, scratching up your deck was crazy. In 1984 a complete board was about $150. That is roughly $340 in today's dollars (accounting for inflation). So we put lots of heavy crap all over them. The trucks had covers. The nose and tail had covers. The sides had rails (Gorilla Ribs on mine). The rear section had rails (Ugly Sticks on mine). And the rear truck had a cover over the center called "The Bird". We didn't use those piss-ant little wheels that get caught on every freaking pebble in the street. So sir. We used BIG wheels. I was rocking a set of Kryptonics big enough to qualify for long-boards use. They weighed... like... 15 pounds.

Who knows, maybe buying a skateboard is a bad idea for an overweight guy in his late 30's. But I've never let a bad idea stand in the way of a good time.

I may know a bit about this subject. I'm only a year younger than you and I still kick around, I'm not really gonna ollie down a ten-stair but I figure if Salba and Tony Alva can still skate into their 50's, we'd be goons not to try.

I still love skating and still have way too many decks, wheels, etc in storage. Upt until two years ago when my shedule got too hectic i was still actively skating pools and bowls. I miss it. I graduate in the spring and may dig out my pads again......who says 49 is too old to skate.....

I was a Powell Peralta guy. I had several Cabbleros and Stedhams. Being from Virgina Beach, you either surfed, played soccer, or skated. I skated and, of course, played guitar.

I found this video that a fan of my old band made, I have no idea who put it together which makes me all that much more stoked about it!
I'm singing on the first song and the second song is on all of Vision Street Wear's classic video reissues, this is PRS relevant as I played my CE on every studio album I have ever done.

Hope it gets someone out there psyched to GO SKATE!

This is in Worcester, but CT has some really killer crete. Stamford has a really fun park with an 11 foot bowl. We used to be road warriors and would travel to PA, MA, NY, NH, anywhere there was a good park.

Is that FDR in the video? That place is gnarly and a really locals only type place. The terrain is rough and kinked but they own it!

I'm not sure, but it looks like it. I honestly have no idea who put that together, I just found it one day on youtube.

Killer looking concrete park, I can't believe how many of them have popped up over the last thirteen years. The great thing for me about skating bowls and pools is just carving, I will try to see how long I can go without putting my foot down and only going grinds and disasters. While falling is a big part of skating, I don't get up as fast as I used to!

I'm pretty sure there is a park in Colorado Springs so get on that board Hans! It won't be log before you start driving to the Denver and Boulder parks. Just make sure you get some softer wheels if you go to the Denver park...it's Sliiiick! I ate it so many times there just pushing.

I use to skate at the bank when I was a kid. It was the only pavement in town smooth enough to ride. Rural, small towns are generally bad for skaters.

I tried to google a picture of my original 1965 skateboard with metal wheels. So there were some pictures on the Life Magazine site, but they weren't very detailed. I wound up, however, finding a photo article on Zsa Zsa Gabor done in 1951, when she was gorgeous.

That wasn't too bad.

Poor woman lived to be nearly 100, though, and at the end...well...she suffered a lot. Better to call it a day a little sooner.

I know, this has nothing to do with skateboarding, dahlink! But wouldn't Zsa Zsa be a great name for the right guitar? It'd have to have lots of bling.

Love love love skateboarding. Started at 9, stopped at 22. Street, pool, miniramp, all game. My first 'real' board was a Santa Cruz Christian Hosoi, loved it and rode it until it came apart.

The only protectors i ever put on the board were the siderails to protect the board from cracking on rails. Later even those were removed. Far too heavy :D

Haven't touched a skateboard in 14 years. But this thread gives me an itch yo try it again.

Btw have any of you switched to snowboarding? I did and it's awesome!

Cool thread \m/

That is fantastic! Love the music (and the video), that's the kind of stuff I listened to when I was skating. Couple of years later, it was all baggy pants and hip hop - WTF?

EDIT: just looked up a couple of the decks I owned - fond memories!

This one was always my favourite: World Industries Mike Vallely Barnyard (doubletail)

You wouldn't drive an F1 car on the Dakar Rally. Similarly, this 35" monster would never see a skatepark.

And my Bauer "fruitboots" only get worn when I'm suited up and holding a stick. That's not fighting. That's Hockey.

I'm just joking around buddy! If there every was a group of people that fear change more than guitarists it would be skateboarders.

My old band did a song for some company that made a longboard/snowboard thing that had two rollerblade-like wheels that was supposed to simulate the feeling of carving on a snowboard. Good thing we cashed that check fast! They were out of the market in less than a year, not that I would EVER wish the same fate on that morally and ethically responsible company known as BMW.

I think one of the coolest things about skateboarders is their general resistance to companies outside of the sport. I saw firsthand through endorsement deals how hard Adidas and Nike tried to break into the sport, with little to no success for Nike.

Being the prissy-nut job that I am, I do really want these Diane Von Furstenberg Sk8 shoes though!

They have not yet reissued my fave yet though, Tony Hawk Claw, when they do I will get one in every color. As it is I have seven of the originals now but none that are NOS new condition.
