Thank you. Looking back, it seems that I've gotten almost as much flack for liking Barry Manilow as I have for liking The REAL/Original KISS. But that's okay; I'm coping...

Elvis has always been a biggie to me. Some of my first memories having to do with music are about Elvis. My favorite era of Elvis is the 70's, the jumpsuit era that started in Vegas and went from there. Here are two different versions of "In The Ghetto":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRfITydVZ7A
This one is a little slower and has less production with the horns, backing vocals, etc.

Here's a little pointless Texas/MTV trivia. Back in the 80's, after Stevie had exploded on the scene, Charlie Sexton was 'discovered', some said by MTV (even though he'd been around for a while; one of those typical 'overnight sensations'). For a time, people in my part of the state would ask 'Stevie or Charlie?' to find out where you stood on things, like a Texas version of the DLR -vs- Sammy debate. But I personally never went for that. I thought it was apples and oranges. I'll freely admit that in my book Stevie was the absolute top of the heap. There was him, then everybody else. Stevie was and will always be in a league of his own to me.
As for this song, I still dig it, in spite of MTV beating us over the head with it back then.

For some reason, I keep going back to this song this week.
What a little video this is! There's a guy playing rhythm with a beautiful GOLDTOP. Then there's another guy with a zebra-striped sax. And out front is THE Guy with his polkadots and showmanship and great (IMO) tone. And not one of them is breaking a sweat. I've never seen Buddy live, but I wish I had been there this night.

This one is a MONSTER! One of several from a show taped in Germany(?), a package of American Blues Stars of Chicago and Mississippi. This one is: Big Mama Thornton, John Lee Hooker (on harp!!!), Walter Horton, Dr. Ross, and others unseen. I think whether you're really into The Blues and/or Boogie, or not, if this one doesn't get you moving then maybe a doctor better take a look at you. Check out how Big Mama leads it all, telling who she wants to come to the mike and when. Cool stuff!

I've been tied up with some personal things for a few days, but I'm back to posting now - at least for a little while. And what a way to start! This video HAS to go in The Goldtop Vault (if I ever do one).
Watching this, several comments come to mind. Among them are:
1. - What a club! Where is this? The oldsters and the youngsters, all living together in peace, united in the love of Bop! Feel that Boogie, Baby!
2. - What's in those bottles? Is that RC Cola, Coke, Rebel Yell, NuGrape, or what? Too early for Mr. Pibb...
3. - Check out the playing position of that bass player. And Eddie thought he invented that approach in the '80's!
4. - Who put their cock on the piano?

Hey Lloyd, good to hear from you! I've been wondering what you've been listening to for a few days.
Thanks very much. I've had the radio on a lot, but as far as choosing things to listen to, today is the first time I've had much of a chance. I feel like myself again.
I hope you've been doing well. And likewise for everyone else.
On a personal note, there is someone here who contacted me because they were concerned that I hadn't posted in a while. I won't mention their name, but I will say that it meant so much to me. There are lots of great folks here, and I'm honored to be a part of the group. May we all have a fantastic 2013, and make every day count!

If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times: "Stop boring me with your drivel and get me a cold beer, Honey!". No, wait... I haven't said that one in a long time. Let me think here...
Oh yeah, now I remember. If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times: Inspiration can come anywhere at any time. The inspiration for my posting this song is something that happened a few minutes ago. In the hall outside my door, I heard two guys at door of the apartment across from mine. One guy said 'Why don't you stay? We'll watch the second game, and I'll bet with you again. Give you a chance to win back some of your money.' The second guy said 'I can't bet again; I ain't got no more loot...' Fine grammar there, but it was enough to remind me of this old song.

Last night I dreamed (dreamt?) about this song. No idea why. Maybe it's a sign of some kind... In an act of (A) faith, and (B) forgiveness towards Santa Claus who boned me this past Christmas, I'm dedicating this song to the PRS Goldtop in my future. (With new models to consider, I've yet to decide which way to go there, but there's plenty of time.) Someday, somewhere down the road, I'll meet her, and she'll make me Happy. And if Santa is verrrry good, and verrrry lucky, I'll play her for him.

Hank Jr. playing at my place right now. The first one is from the time shortly before he fell down the side of a mountain and almost died. Sort of the end of what he was, and the start of him becomming what he wanted to be. Can you imagine trying to live in the shadow of Hank Williams Sr.? The name, the profession, the naysayers, the crap about 'you ain't your daddy!'... Back then he couldn't get through a song without some fool yelling nonsense from the audience. I wouldn't have wanted to be in Hank Jr.'s shoes. Love him, hate him, indifferent to him, you gotta give it to him for his heart and determination.

Esteban! Some people may knock him because of his QVC/HSN connection, but the way I look at it, if one person somewhere in the world decides to give music - especially guitar - a try because of seeing and hearing him, then that's great. If one new person ends up getting even a tiny bit of the joy from music that you or I do, then that's a win all the way around.

In 1980 (?) there was a movie being released that looked good, and I was waiting for it to get to the theaters. The big night came, and I saw what was to become one of my favorite movies ever. It was "The Blues Brothers", and man, did it have some stars in it. Aretha! Ray Charles! I got to hear Duck Dunn SPEAK. (For some reason, I was surprised that he sounded as Southern as I did myself.)
In one of the scenes with Murf and The Magic Tones (Steve Cropper!), they were playing this song. It stuck in my head, and I spent the next few weeks trying to find out what the title was and who had recorded it. Called the radio stations in town, even went to the libraries to search. Nothing. Finally, on one of my hunting trips to a used record store, I stumbled over an old album that had the song on it.
Back then, I didn't know "Quando, Quando, Quando" from "Three Blind Mice", but I do now. Of all of the versions out there, I like this one the best. I love my Englebert Humperdinck; it takes a man to say that my friends!

I just spent the last hour watching Austin City Limits. The guest tonight was Tim McGraw. Lots of songs about 'gettin' rowdy tonight and jumpin' in the truck', 'blastin' the speakers in my truck', 'she was wearin' them jeans', and so on. BUT, the big draw and the reason I watched it was because his lead player had some cool guitars, including a tobacco sunburst Junior, and... A GOLDTOP DGT!!! That was worth the hour to me. My kingdom for a Goldtop PRS! Either a DGT, a Stripped 58, or a 245!!! C'mon winning lottery ticket...

This version by Redd was interesting to me for a number of reasons. First of all, it's Redd! I think he's great. Austin Texas Royalty. You name them, and they probably like Redd and his playing. Soooo many cool jam sessions in his career.
Secondly, how often do you see a left-handed steel guitar player? Maybe it's because this video was shot in NSW, who knows?
Thirdly, how often do you hear an audience in America being this polite, especially in a small setting? No drunken whooping or hollering. No endless, inconsiderate 'whooooooooo-ing' or 'yeahhhh!' interrupting the music. Thank you, crowd!

This is my "T-O-O-T" for Saturday. TO ME, this version by Aretha is one of the best pieces of music ever recorded. By anybody.
WHAT TONE! That studio was amazing. There's probably a more technical name (I sometimes call it resonance), but mostly I refer to it as 'The Sound of The Air'. I'd have to go snoop around to be sure, but if I'm not mistaken Tom Dowd was in on this. Sounds like his work to me.
There is so much going on in this song. So many layers. I think any one track of it could stand on its own if released. (I'd buy them anyway.) JUST the lead vocals, or just the backup vocals. Or THE DRUMS! So complex and so simple at the same time. To me, this is a Masterpiece.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGAiW5dOnKo
As far as covers go, I dig this one. This band never really made it, and I don't know why. Maybe I'm the only one who liked 'em...?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUSof5IIIpE
One more thing, and I'm being sincere. This is directed to all adults who may be reading this:
In the Aretha version, at the 1:20 mark, the background girls/ladies go into the 'woop, woops'... Have you ever had someone you care about - or even love - go 'woop' in your ear like this? Sort of a combination of gently blowing/whispering. A close, warm, loving hug, lean in close, lips right up to your ear, and a gentle 'woop...'. Instant goosebumps.
I've been fortunate enough to both give and receive that in my life, and I recommend it. Under the best of circumstances, it's a direct connection from heart to heart. It's several days early, but my Valentine's Day wish for you all is that you experience that.

Tuesday February 12, 2013. Today is Chynna Phillips' birthday. She's 55. Here's a head-scratcher: When her mother Michelle (of The Mamas & Papas) was pregnant with her, she chose to go with an alternative approach to the childbirth. Experimental incense from The Orient was burned day and night, and Michelle also indulged in the practice of chanting. Her chant of choice was repeated in various languages throughout the pregnancy, and it consisted of the simple phrase 'hold on'. Many years later, that same phrase was the inspiration for this song.

Back in 2007 I was visiting a friend in Biloxi Mississippi. While I was in town, she wanted to take me to a gig, and we ended up at The Hard Rock Casino and Hotel. The gig was Scandal, Eddie Money, and this guy. WHAT A SHOW! Scandal was great and had the clearest sound of the three. Eddie Money was really who I was there to see, and he put on a good, solid show, did the hits and then some others I wanted to hear, so no complaints there.
Then this guy came out, and to be honest, I wasn't expecting all that much. Was I ever wrong! He tore the place down! One of the best shows I have ever seen. Period. So much for my small mind. My advice is: If you ever get the chance to go see him, don't pass it up.
Rick, if you read this, I am sorry for my narrow mind and small expectations. You are the Real Deal! Thank you for one of the best shows ever.

This video scares me. It's George Jones when he was a becomming a big name. Not huge yet, not legendary, but working towards it. Johnny Paycheck on bass, vocals, and - unless I miss my guess - stimulants.
The thing here that scares me most is the crowd. Are these children, or Little People, or some of both? And what about the couple towards the end? The old guy with the young girl beside him. 'Connie, we always told you to keep an eye on Pop! Now look what's happened! Looks like he's full of 'shine and mischief to me...
I'd bet my last road aspirin that that drummer is certain trouble, as most drummers are. If that dude isn't a lit fuse waiting to go bang, I've never seen one.

A Day devoted to love. Cool, since I love some of these songs today!
Who remembers England Dan and John Ford Coley? There may be some reading this who never heard of them until now. They had some hits in the '70's Soft Rock era. Pastel-colored three piece suits, open collars, necklaces of tiny spoons on tiny chains ('what was that all about?' he wondered.) And England Dan later dropped the 'England', got more into the Montana Cowboy thing, and had some hits, one of which was with Marie after she and Donnie split; 'Meet Me in Montana'.

Proof that odd videos can come from any time and any place. What is this, Gilligan's Island? How are they powering these instruments? (Especially that bass, which makes the song IMO.) And Skeletons dancing around a guy in a big pot of dry ice fog? Dry ice on an island? And if you're already skeletons, isn't it too late to 'cook' somebody anyway?
With all of the electricity obviously needed for this, it seems like they could fire up some saws and whatever to build a boat to get The Castaways home. Maybe not all of them, but at least MaryAnn, who I thought was Hot Stuff! MaryAnn, don't go back home to Corn Cob, Iowa or wherever it was you were from; come to Texas, Baby!

Jennifer or Bailey Quarters?
Wilma or Betty? (the same choice as Alice or Trixie?)

That, my friend, is a trade I'm gonna have to think about for awhile! I thought Bailey was much hotter than Loni's Jennifer. Likewise, I didn't care for Ginger at all. Too tarted up for my tastes.
I compliment you on having a great eye. Now, which one; Shirley or Laurie Partridge?

Right on!
I never got, well, ok, I get what Loni Anderson had going for her, but that didn't do it for me. Jan Smithers was the sultry hot one for me. And thankfully the re-runs are on at 8 each night, and she hasn't aged a bit.

Here's a mercifully short version of this song. I thought Donna Summer had a pretty voice, and I thought she was beautiful and all, but if I listened to the 88 minute (or however long it was) version of this I'd want to stick a fork in my ear. There are only about ten words in the whole thing.
Cool about this video to me is that the German (?) camera operator seems to have a foor fetish similar to my own. I dig cool boots and shoes (don't send the cops; it's just a mild interest), and I noticed Donna's gold numbers here right off. I'd be willing to bet that they were made by the same wardrobe staff that did KISS. They look a LOT like the boots Ace wore on the Dynasty Tour, only his were silver with mirrors. Makes sense, right? Same record label (Casablanca), same studios (Record Plant, Electric Lady), same staff behind the scenes in other areas (Neil Bogart). Music much too similar towards the end of The Glory Days (Dynasty and "I Was Made for Lovin' You", The Elder).

Might as well stay with what's working here. Man, did I have the hots for this woman! I MEAN T-H-E H-O-T-S!!! Man, when I tell you she was cool, she was red hot. I mean she was steamin'!
Then I found out she was married to the dude in the sailor hat. Finito. Adios, old friend from South of the Border (if you know what I mean). I was just getting my senses back, and they got a tv series on ABC (?). And back in lust I went. It was almost more than I could take. To top it all off, about this time I got my first little tv for my own bedroom. The story from there is better left to the imagination...
I'm all better now. Maybe. (I still have the album with Toni, Cappy, and their bulldogs on the cover, but I'm not going to go dig it out of the files. Really I'm not.)

With the discussion about taste in women Re: their looks, this might seem like an odd post, but not really. I think this woman is one of the most under-appreciated talents ever. She's an actor. She's a serious songwriter, right up there with Willie in numbers, tours the world and sells out everywhere she goes, gives back to her community, is open to and supportive of lifestyles and cultures that many lesser performers would run and hide from, and on and on. And if you care about animals, at her amusement park/cultural center in The Smokey Mountains, she has a program dedicated to the preservation of Bald Eagles. If you ever saw an Eagle fly at a sporting event somewhere, chances are it came from her Dollywood facility.
She looks artificial, but it's her own doing, and she's in on the joke. Listen to her speak, and she's the most open, down to earth, self-effacing person you could imagine. I'm an outsider, and far from an authority, but I've been around music for a long time, and I've never heard one bad thing about her.
Could you open yourself up and write like she does? Could you pour your heart out to total strangers as a way of life? I don't think I could, but if I tried, I might want a little something to hide behind too. But then again, I don't have anywhere near the talent she does, so it's a moot point.

Friday. Thankfully. It's been a strange week. Hot weather one day, nearly a foot of snow overnight and temps in the teens, and today back to mild 50's.
I lost an Angel this week, but I know she's doing so well right now that it's worth it. At this moment, I believe she's enjoying every bit of the joy and peace and love she gave to me and others. As I did a few days ago, I'm dedicating a song to her. This time, it's more for the title than anything else.
Mary, my love is alive for you. I'll see you again, so save a place for me. We won't have to suffer through any more awful pork chops ever again.

I ended up having a pretty busy Friday, which I didn't expect. I may talk about some of it later on. Or not.
I haven't done a "T-O-O-T" for a couple of days, so here's one. I like them both, but I gotta give the nod to Elvis. Man, I wish I'd been able to see Elvis. I'm still a little put out with my parents for never letting me go see him. He played here and fairly close by several times in the 70's, but the closest I got was riding by the coliseum and looking at the cars. The main venue here holds about eight thousand, and the last time Elvis played here it seemed like there were that many cars parked around the place. HUGE crowd for this town.

Good Sunday Morning People.
If you happened to catch my post yesterday in The Grammys thread, it contained a message to little Miss Swift that mentioned Brittany Howard. If you aren't familar with her, hopefully you will be soon. She's in a band called Alabama Shakes and they have a new CD out called "Boys & Girls". This is only my opinion - as is everything else I post - but I think Brittany is AMAZING! I was and still am a huge fan of Adele, but I think Brittany is even better. She has such passion, such power, and such honesty. She's fearless and just pours herself into what she's doing.
On the television show "Austin City Limits" last night, the performers were Alabama Shakes and Gary Clark Jr., and I've still got the smile on my face from seeing it.

Monday. Been a busy one, but NO bad news came my way today. That breaks a pattern of bad news every Monday for the last six weeks, and I am glad that is over! Onward and upward!
This is Mark Andes' birthday. He was once in this band, and later in his career he played in a band called Heart. So Happy Birthday to him!
Two little pieces of trivia: The guitar player in this band was named Randy California. In a weird twist of fate, he was brought in as a replacement for another guitarist. That guitarist was named Leon Pennsylvania.
--- and ---
The inspiration for the title of this song was one of the band member's fondness for deep sea fishing.

Depending upon which book you read, how much of the bickering you choose to believe, etc., there is a lot of debate about who actually played on this album. In my opinion, the truth falls somewhere between the guy who swept up the studio(s) they were working in, and the four original members of the band themselves. No matter who played what, I think there is some good, American Rock & Roll in places on this album, and I still dig it.
I've seen KISS nearly fifty times, and never once have I seen what I would consider a bad gig. Some were better than others, but never once did I feel cheated, whether I bought a ticket, or had passes, or crashed it (once). All those years of maintaining that level of quality says a lot to me.

Thanks to Keith and his book, The Stones are finally beginning to grow on me a little.
In 1981, I had a choice between two road trips to gigs as a ittle present to myself. One choice was The Stones in Dallas on (I think) the "Start Me Up" record tour (the LP was "Tattoo You" maybe?). The other option was to go to Houston for one of the few regular festivals held in the US at that time, The Texxas World Music Festival. That year they did a show in Dallas and a show in Houston at The Astrodome. I decided to go the Astrodome gig. The co-headliners were Heart and REO Speedwagon, with a flock of openers. Blue Oyster Cult, Johnny Van Zandt Band, and others that I can't remember right now.
I never regretted my decision, and I still don't. But I would like to take in a Stones show someday.

I'm not trying to breed drama here, but BRITTANY is the heart and soul of this band. If she's loyal to the unit, that's cool. I admire that. But either way, I predict we'll remember her name longer than we'll remember the name of the band.

Up until this week, I hadn't listened to this album in ten or fifteen years. One night I kept dreaming about Charlie Daniels (???), so I dug this out. I forgot just how much I liked this band.
We're all here because we love music, and especially PRS Guitars, but as I said in the post above, there's just something special to me when you get the right two (or three) Les Pauls mixing together. This song is a case in point: Charlie on a Sunburst, and the late Tommy Crain on a Goldtop. Trading lines, doing unisons, whatever... Music to my ears! (No pun intended.)
This is a song that purely by coincidence relates to my ex-wife; Caballo Diablo. Translation = Devil Horse. (I think 'Burro Diablo' would have been more accurate, but that's just me.)

Good Monday Morning Everybody! Man, what a good week we're gonna have. The last one of February, which means...?
In another thread, the op posed the question 'how cold is it where you are?'. This morning, I can answer that by saying it's cold here! A front came in during the night. Blowing snow since the wee hours and still going strong as I write this at about 10AM, and cancellations everywhere. I love cold weather, and the temp is only down to the 20's (which isn't bad to me), but with the high wind it's rough. Not really a White Out, but it's trying.

This is a clip from a biography filmed shortly before he died. I can't think of another artist who arguably did their best, most powerful work, at the end of their careers and lives. He was already an icon, an institution, but he peaked in his last days. Incredible.
I'm proud to say that Johnny Cash was my first musical hero. It was him and Elvis. Lots of other artists and performers have come along that I'm a fan of, that I respect and/or admire, but none will ever take the place of Johnny Cash. There are a handful who are close, but Johnny's at the Top.
I hope every person who reads this has someone in music who means as much to them as Johnny Cash does to me.

I agree 100% Shawn. I admit that I'm not a huge U2 fan anyway, but be that as it may, Johnny took this to another level. In the clip of the bio I posted, Rick Rubin talks about this very subject.

I've been up most of the night, reading and listening to things. Too into Johnny Cash to sleep... He and his music have seen me through some hard times in the past, and they probably will again. I was thinking 'who in music today could someday be like him?'. Not equal him, because that's impossible. But who are we hearing today that has the potential and promise to really be special, be iconic? One name I kept coming back to was Jack White. I've never met him, but he seems to have a good head on his shoulders. He's got a great sense of the musical past, knows the roots, is fearless, and seems to care little about sales or trends. It's all about the music to him. I think he's unique, and I see the potential for him to do some amazing things before he's finished.
Of course, I could be dead wrong, and Jack could end up working in a Chili's somewhere someday. But I hope not. I hope he's in music to stay.

A different kind of "T-O-O-T" today... "THREE On One Tune"! First, the original, then probably the most well known, and finally, a solo geetar version. I really like this guy's playing by the way. Some of his arrangements catch me off guard at times, which is not to say I think they're bad. I love his tone and touch. Great harmonics. Keith Whitley, Alison Krauss & Union Station, and Stu Clark.

Happy Friday Everybody!
Okay, this may be considered a confession of some kind. Not in my eyes, but whatever. I LIKE LOVERBOY! There, I said it. However that paints me, gimme the brush! Their first two or three albums were and still are fantastic IMO.
I saw them on their (I think) first big tour opening for AC/DC on the "Back In Black" tour. Picture this: Bon Scott had died after AC/DC had made their best album ever (in my opinion, and the opinions of many others). The band had this new singer nobody had ever heard of, some guy who wore a goofy cap all the time, and who sounded like he gargled with Drano. A voice MUCH different than Bon's. But they were coming to town, so of course everybody was going.
If the changes to AC/DC weren't enough, the band who was opening for them was some unknown bunch from Canada named 'Loverboy'. Well, isn't that cute. How sweet. 'Loverboy'. "Oh, yoo hoo, come here Loverboy, you cutie you! Yoooo Hooooo." That was the attitude of most of us in the crowd that night. The song "Turn Me Loose" had been getting some airplay on the radio, but still... Loverboy? C'mon; how good could they be?
The big night finally gets here. How many times had I taken my ticket out of my wallet and looked at it? A million? Showtime. Lights go down, crowd goes up, strange aroma is all around (?), and this bassline starts thumping. Stage is still dark. After about a minute, the synth joins in. Stage is still dark. This goes for about another minute. Then, f-i-n-a-l-l-y, the guitar rages in, and the stage is still dark!!! The sound mix is perfect. Loud, clear, powerful. I mean L-O-U-D! And clear! And POWERFUL! I thought my heart would explode out of my chest. It was one of the finest moments in my life. I was young, I was alive, I had a few bucks in my pocket, and I was ready to take on the world! This music affected me so much that I was almost scared by it. It was incredible. And they hadn't even officially started yet!
By now, most of us in the crowd are excited to say the least. I was through the roof myself. I was ready to vote these guys President. After what had to be a full four or five minute opening and building, building, building the tension and expectation IN TOTAL DARKNESS - BOOM! Drums and the rest of the band take off. The lights go up, and we see Loverboy for the first time. Lots or reds and yellows and blacks, Nikes all around, and tons of puffy hair. And they're in high gear. All serious, all business, all Rock and Roll! They were just unbelievable.
From that night until today, I've been a fan of Loverboy. And their guitar player Paul Dean. As usual, he had what I thought was a great tone. (We all like who we like and think they're great for one reason or another, you know?) His sound was powerful, a little brittle, a little nasal, but still warm. Not piercing and painful. I could only like Paul Dean more if he was from Texas! In fact, parts of his playing remind me of David Grissom, and vice versa. Just that certain element to their tone that I love.
Loverboy changed my life forever that night. AC/DC was good, but to me, the stars that night were Loverboy. That may sound insane to some, but all I can say is that you must not have been there.
One more thing; I carried a bottle of Southern Comfort into the show that night in my boot. (I was in my Southern Comfort phase then.) I still have it. A nice little memento from thirty-something years ago...

Cool post Goldtop! Like your candeur.
And yes, Loverboy is a band nobody wanted to admit they liked their music. Kinda of a "love to hate" thing... Even here, in C'nada...
Another band that didn't quite get the recognition they deserved IMO, in the same era, is April Wine...

Please let me begin with a disclaimer: I don't like Justin Bieber's music. I don't even call what he produces 'music'. Now, my story...
I have a neighbor who is in a rehab center/nursing home right now. She asked me to get a book for her. The bookstore close to my apartment didn't have what she was looking for, so this morning I went to another one of their stores across town to look there. On the way home I stopped at Sonic to get a Coke (a day without a Coke is a day with a headache for me), and while I was there, on the P.A. I heard the following announcement: 'All right, kids! Here's some Old School Justin Bieber for ya!'. I almost had an attack. GIVE ME A BREAK, WILLYA??
Old School? Justin Bieber? OLDSCHOOLJUSTINBIEBER?!?!?!
Thankfully, the carhop brought my Coke just in time and I made my getaway. When I got home I went to YouTube, found this, played it, and found I didn't hate it. Imagine that. I think it would be much better without all of the studio trickery, but still; I don't hate it.
