Sunday morning. Here is a Sunday T-O-O-T.
In an earlier post I mentioned that yesterday I went to look for a book for a neighbor. The store I went to was a books/music/video chain called Hastings. While I was there, I had no choice but to look at the music too (you know how that is, right?). $1.99 later I had a Best Of CD of this guy. When I was younger, I loved this guy's music, but as happens sometimes - at least to me - I just gradually stopped listening to him for some unknown reason. Probably his biggest song was one that he wrote and Elvis recorded; "Kentucky Rain". I thought he was great at doing love songs like the two here.

Saturday Night March 30 in NYC at B.B. King's the ORIGINAL menbers of The Moving Sidewalks reunite for a gig. I'm sticking out my thumb tomorrow morning so I'll be able to make it up there in time (like there'll be any tickets left!). Billy G. on guitar, vocals, weird voices, weird whatever!

Oh, Baby! Mr. Willie Nelson is scheduled to play here tomorrow night, and I will be there. Tickets too rich for my blood, but I'm still going. I may even try to meet him and shake his hand. That would be nice, and an honor for me.
On a more personal note: Some of you may remember my writing about the first concert I attended waaaay back when. It was a Willie show, and by a twist of fate I ended up with a young(?) lady(?) sitting beside me. I never knew her name, but I've always thought of her as 'Connie', so... Connie, if you're reading this, I'll be looking for you tomorrow night. I don't look the same as I did back then. I don't imagine you do either, but that's cool with me. Three gold earrings on my left ear. ("My Trinity" as I call them... Their meaning changes frequently, but tomorrow they'll be in honor of Willie. Hugh. Nelson.). Medium beard, hair down to my butt, probably in a ponytail. I'll be in a Cheap Trick t-shirt. Look me up, Darling; I'll buy us a Geritol, we'll pop a Centrum Silver apiece and make some memories!

Of my two hundred-or-so favorite Willie songs, this is one of the top five. Willie and Lee Ann. And maybe more importantly, Texas. This video says soooo much to me about the Texas I know and love. Out in the country, but not too far from the city. A crisp, clear night (according to Willie's breath). Millions of stars in the sky. A big back yard. Strings of lights hanging in the trees. The get-together's over and most everybody has gone home. A guy with a guitar. A beautiful woman - inside and out - in a pretty dress, slowly dancing on the grass in her bare feet. In Texas.
There haven't been enough nights like that in my life. But I'm not done yet...

Remember The Alamo! In another thread, I talked about Texas, and the significance of today's date in our history. March 6, 1836, The Alamo fell. It was a terrible defeat of a few brave people who were outnumbered by as much as twenty to one by some accounts. It was also a turning point, and in many ways it was actually the beginning of Texas. I Love TEXAS!!!

I went to see Willie last night. A great show. Two thousand seat auditorium; intimate as opposed to the ancient eight thousand seat all concrete hockey arena in the same complex. Better sound too, although it's always iffy here no matter where you go. Willie and Family with the bare necessities. For example, the two drummers (Paul English and his son) traded off; One would play bongos and percussion, and the other did the main job on a single snare(!). They traded back and forth almost every song. Willie front and center was the only guitar. The bass player alternated between a Precision and an upright, again switching for almost every song. Sister Bobbie on piano. She is SO underrated in my opinion. She can do classical, boogie, barrelhouse, rock and roll, country, jazz, you name it. And she is such a sweet, classy lady.
They did nearly two hours, much of it new from an album due out next month. And of course they had THE backdrop, the HUGE Texas flag. That same start as I wrote about in my post about the first show I ever attended. They come out, Willie straps on Trigger, hits a few chords, then BOOM! The Texas flag unfurls behind them, and off they go. It was as magical last night as it was all those years ago. Willie will turn eighty in April. See him while you can.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgYQXJo6c6Q
On a Personal Note: I didn't happen to see 'Connie' last night, but there were some ladies in the crowd who could very well have been her. But I did run into a casual acquaintance who was a real sweetheart. I've known her for years, and I've always thought she was special, and last night she proved it. So this is for her: Jennifer, thank you. I will never forget last night, and I love you for it. You're beautiful.

Happy Monday (in America), People!!!
Weird, and perhaps uncomfortable, truth time. I found out last week that I need a new knee. (100% True.) I got some shots in it as a temporary fix, but it's ruined. On the plus side, the shots help the pain a little. Negative side, it is temporary, and I can already feel them wearing off. Today I got up, and my knee feels verrrry strange inside. It feels hot, it feels sticky... That's two out of three, right?

Listening to the one above, and comparing it to this, the question that comes to mind is 'What happened?'. Troubling in my opinion. I for one am so glad that their 'techno era' is over. Hopefully. I saw them a few months ago, and at long last they seem to be back to doing what they do best.
'Let's see here... I'm part of a legendary blues/rock/boogie band. I'm one of the most well known and well respected guitarists in the world. Our band is a shining example of the simple beauty and power of hard work, dedication, and honoring our roots and those who passed this music down to us in the first place. We've spent a major portion of our lives getting to this point. What do we do next? I know! Let's stop using the incredible rhythm section we have, get some machines, pile on some studio gimmicks and buffoonery, and try to cover the uncoverable ie:Elvis! Then, we'll tour, and regardless of what other new music we release along the way, we'll use basically the same setlist on every tour for the next decade.'
Great plan, Billy. Thanks for that...

I've seen it a couple of times, but it's not the kind of thing I'm into so... Anyway, in this episode, they were having a Cow Bingo tournament. Now it all makes sense. Now I know why it happened. The reason the aforementioned program with the cow bingo tournament was on my tv this morning when I turned it on was so that I'd be on the right channel to catch this. An hour long show of Alan Jackson doing gospel songs. He has a gospel album coming out Tue. the 26th, and the program was a showcase/promo for it. Shot at The Ryman in Nashville, with his mom and other family in the audience, and Brent Mason playing guitar with him. Here's one of the numbers.
So, thanks cow bingo!

This is "Some Good Years" by The Cowsills. There's a documentary/biography playing on Showtime this month called "Family Band - The Story of The Cowsills". It's all about the lives and careers of this group, and it may be of interest to some of you. The story of the family itself and some of the problems they've faced over the years, as well as a look at their music. They may be most famous to some as the inspiration for the TV series "The Partridge Family", but there's a lot more to them than that.

This is for Barry Fey. He and his company were responsible for putting together so many incredible shows over the years. Personally, I came to believe that if an upcomming show had 'Feyline Productions' (or one of his other corporate names) attached to it then chances are it would be a fantastic and well-run event. If you are interested in the music world, and what goes on behind the scenes, then I suggest you read his book "Backstage Past".

Today is Billy Joel's birthday, so Happy Birthday to him! This is one of my favorite songs from Billy. One of my favorite videos too, although there are some good and bad points about it.
Good Point No. 1 - He's 'playing' a fine Goldtop Deluxe (?) in this.
Good Point No. 2 - There are a couple of girls in the crowd who do this shoulder shoulder hunching thing (one of 'em is at about the 1:55 mark). I don't know why, but I dig that.
Bad Point No. 1 - Billy breaks my Number One "Rule for The Making of Music Videos", which is to never, never, NEVER, EVER have your significant other in your video. NEVER! When it all goes South, and the odds are overwhelming that it will, then you're stuck with them in your video. A constant reminder of 'the days when things were okay...' is not a good thing. Plus, it's not The Rock and Roll Way. Follow the rules, Billy! Listen to KISS, man! Love 'em, Leave 'em, Give 'em cab fare!

More Billy. Again, he's breaking my Number One Rule in this. But in all fairness, I gotta give him a pass because he may not even be aware of said rules since we've never met. It's the only city up here in the cow pastures; everything else is a little podunk town. (When's the last time a band played a gig in White Deer? Or Umbarger? I'll start this post with an apology and a heads up. This video is nearly an hour long, and there are some words in it that some people may find objectionable. Nothing filthy, and none of the big F-word, but there are a f-e-w times (five or so) when someone uses a 'fecal synonym'. If the mods find it to be over the line and deem some sort of punishment necessary, then the buck stops with me.
This is a documentary from a few years ago about a song written and performed by Big & Rich. While doing a gig, they met a man who was a Viet Nam veteran. I'll let the video itself take it from there. It's quite a story IMO.
This is just one story about one person in one battle in one war. There are thousands and thousands of others that illustrate why I believe we all should remember and honor these brave people. If you or someone close to you is in any branch of the Service now, or is a veteran, thank you. Happy Memorial Day.

So, in an effort to get rid of the bad taste it left in my mouth, I've been listening to some of what IMO is real Country Music. I had an appointment first thing today to get injections in my left shoulder and right knee. They say the needle is 'only about three inches long', but that measurement isn't taken from the receiving end I promise you...
To treat myself afterwards, I hit the books and music store, and - BOOM! Cheap Trick/Rick Nielsen cover story on GP Magazine. On the way out, there waiting for me in the bargain bin - BOOM Again! Three CD set of CT in a neat little Checkerboard tin. For under a dollar! Just a few bucks on me until next month, but I didn't hesitate. Cheap Trick is one of "My Big Five"!

Sunday - and Father's Day - in the USA! I have no family, and never had kids, but I asked myself:
'If I was a dad, on this special day, what music might I want to hear? And what might I want to see in a video today?'
Naturally, those answers were: I'd want to listen to some Cher. And I'd want to see her on a ship with hundreds of sailors. Or maybe in a skimpy outfit on the back of a horse, singing about her make-believe Cherokee heritage...

Nobody asked, but I never thought Cher and Gene Simmons were a good match. I haven't met Cher (yet), but I have met Gene, and I just didn't see it. Of course, the same rules apply to them as do to the rest of us ie: their personal business is their personal business. But since they are in the public eye, I felt I was allowed to have an opinion, and that opinion was: Cher, you're too good for him!
