Going through my Record Store Day purchases, listening to the "Eight Trails, One Path" compilation of solo acoustic guitar from Three Lobed records. Great stuff!

What's on your record player/iPod right now?

I'm currently splitting my time between Alter Bridge, Dream Theater, Jane's Addiction and Machine Head as well as a bit of Brad Paisly as my curve ball 8-)

I've spent the last week, learning a couple AB songs (Ties that bind, wonderful life, Ghost of Days gone by and Rise today) and am contemplating nailing the solo to Tornado of souls by Megadeth which has bugged me a couple yrs now..

I've been listening to a lot of Beethoven.

Interesting historical note: Beethoven became deaf when he was bending down to help fix a bad cable on Mozart's pedal board, and had his head right in front of the bass player's speaker cab; the bass player (Haydn) didn't see him, cranked his amp, and hit a really loud note...

After that, Beethoven was so concerned about his rapidly failing hearing that he played only acoustic gigs from then on.

A lot of Joe Bonamassa. I just love his phrasing and runs, and just tone in general. Funny thing is you listen to him talk in an interview, you would never in a million years guess his singing voice sounds the way it does.

Just got the Beacon Theatre DVD too, and is rockin. I love John Hiatt's guest performance on there as well.

Grilling a beer can chicken and listening to Real Estate's self titled album.

Tip: those big Fosters cans look like a good base for a beer can chicken, but they're just tall enough that it won't fit under a standard charcoal Weber lid.

All of Stephen Bruton's 5 CD's. Stephen (RIP) was a very good friend of David Grissom - he produced some of the Storyville recordings, he and David co-wrote together, and the last song "Final Rendezvous" on David's new CD is about Stephen.

He was a tasteful guitarist, and a great PRS artist.

True but I mean there really wasn't a Mastodon or Metallica heavy group in the late 60s, was there? So I think he was pretty heavy for his time. You can tell because apparently parents didn't like their kids listening to him

I've been listening to a lot of All That Remains and This Town Needs Guns lately. All That Remains is a metal band with great percussive rhythm sensibilities and fluid lead word. This Town Needs Guns is a more eclectic math rock band with intricate double capo'd alternate tuned guitar work. Two polar opposites of the music spectrum but brilliant groups in their own right.

Theres a guy on a Guitar forum in Australia that I am on who has just brought out an instrumental album and i am really enjoying it. Not much in the way of shredding, just some really nice melodic stuff and the video to their tune '130' is well worth checking out. They are called 'Meniscus'and their ep is called 'War of currents.' I ended up dowloading the EP on Bandcamp and haven't been able to stop listening to it! Lots of HD footage of the space shuttle and our tiny planet from way up there!

Somehow I've been listening to new bands that sound like they belong in the 70s a lot and I'm pretty sure most of their audience weren't around then.
Mumford and Sons just isn't getting tired for me - more refined than the real 70s
Sheepdogs might get stale, but you have to like a band that would record in Saskatchewan and they've been good fun so far - much better vocabulary than the real 70s

Texas Troubadour Joe Ely accompanied by the great David Grissom playing a Standard 24.

The sound quality is not great, but still a fantastic performance by David and Joe. I've always wanted to learn to play these two solos, but I'm too embarrassed to ask David for a lesson. :)

Shawn,

I'm jealous! I can only imagine the greats you've dealt with over the years. I'd love to meet David and talk guitars/music/whatever for a few minutes, but I'd be embarrassed to ask for a lesson too.

Man, you have some of my favorites on that list. I fell in love with that Judas Priest the day it came out, and I never get tired of listening to it. So much of the playing on it is a bit slower, more soulful. "Desert Plains", "Heading Out to the Highway", and especially "Turning Circles".

Thanks for this list. You've got me revisiting some great ones.

Devin Townsend is releasing a 4-DVD live boxset soon and I can't wait for it. Devin takes metal to a whole new level, by doing everything how he wants and he works on 2 albums at a time. Last release, he released his heaviest CD to date as well as an all acoustic record at the same time - both beautiful - and both completely unrelated. I'd urge everyone to check him out becuase his live show is enormous. Hopefully PRS takes care of his rythem guitarist "The Beard" because he is an avid Mushok user who abuses them accross the world haha

Sure - the code is

Basically the X's represent the youtube video ID. So when you find a youtube video you like, click the "Share" button, then copy the URL they provide like this: http://youtu.be/4j57mSOrO1g

The everything after the / is the youtube ID. Also when in doubt, feel free to quote someones video and just edit their code!

Here's how I do it:

If I happen to be watching a YouTube clip, I copy and cut the URL of it. Then, I come here and login, choose the correct topic, hit 'reply to thread'. That moves me down to the text box at the bottom of the page. I write a comment (or not), then I hit the icon for 'Insert Video'. Paste the URL in the popup screen, hit 'ok', finish my post, and hit 'quick reply'. Done.

Please count me in as a big Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers fan. "Southern Accents" is one of my absolute favorite albums. IMO, they're some of the best songwriters (and musicians) to ever come along. 'With one foot in the grave, and one foot on the pedal; I was born a Rebel.' Holy Moses. This song gives me chills every single time I hear it.

Yeah man I hear ya - I have to admit though what won my heart and encouraged me to look more into Dallas himself was the first time I heard this song. Throughout the whole song he adds his clean vocals and its..... flawless (for me). Like in the begining when he starts singing over the fat drum sound I literally said "damn" outloud hahah The real kicker is that he can actually pull his vocals off live too, unlike a lot of people who seem to enjoy "studio magic" nowadays :(

Bad Company. I always liked the chords in this one. It would be great to see the band today and hear a certain Mr. Leese and his flock of PRS guitars.

This weekend I've seen the 2011 Ozzy documentary "God Bless Ozzy Osbourne" twice, and I've been listening to lots of his music. Back in the dark ages known as the 80's I was fortunate enough to see Ozzy three different times with three different guitarists (Randy, Bernie Torme, and Brad Gillis) in the space of a few months. Incredible every time.

So in Ozzy's honor, here is my favorite Black Sabbath tune. 'Ya gotta believe me!'

Cinderella - Bad Seamstress Blues/ Falling Apart at the Seams. I got tired of everything I was listening to and turned on the Hair Bands station on Pandora. Cinderella came on and took me back a few years. Loved listening to these guys in the 80s and saw them in concert twice. Long Cold Winter is an underrated album in my opinion.

Same here! There were some gems in the Hair Band days; you just had to look for them.

I saw Cinderella open for AC/DC on their (I think) "Blow Up Your Video" tour. A great show from the moment the lights went down.

Technically not a 'Hair Band' in my book, but they got lumped in with that genre back in the '80s anyway. One of my personal Top Ten Bands!
