I love these guitars, specifically alder bodied with maple tops. I believe them to be the "Champagne" of the Annapolis era Paul Reed Smith's, and would love to see if any of you have some pictures/stories of them.

This one has been my constant companion for at least eighteen years. Every show and every studio date, and quite honestly most of the best times of my life, have been done with this guitar.

While certainly not the most expensive guitar I have owned, it is my favorite.

There is no denying that the CE was an important product in the early PRS line. A lot of people started off playing the CE's and continue to love them today. I kind of wish they kept them as I've always been a fan of bolt-on necks.

I love the alder CE's as well! A good friend of mine has a CE24 alder with a maple fretboard. That thing has some serious 'tude! Very immediate and LOUD! I have offered to buy it a few times but he won't budge. I guess that would be my ultimate CE: alder body with a maple fretboard!

Thanks for the kind words buddy,
There is a certain "loudness" to these instruments, and your friend's CE sounds like a guitar worth chasing. It is really cool to hear and feel the differences between all the different CEs, while looking for a backup I have come across a few mahogany versions and wasn't as excited. The maple topped alder models have a somewhat "scooped" sound to (my ear), that really drives most any amp into a "hi-fi" kind of tone.
It has grown with me from very heavy music in my youth, to the clean toned R&B and reggae I do now. Cool versatile guitars for sure.

My CE-24. Pretty sure it's a Hog body, Maple Top but it still Rocks Hard. It has some very hot VB and HFS pups in it.

Hey! I was just drooling over that purple top over at VR!
The mahogany ones are really cool too, kind of like a Blanc de Noir to the alders Blanc de Blanc, slightly darker but still sparkly champagne.

I still have my ce's....Thank god I never sold them....they are absolutely killer...there is an immediacy from a feel standpoint that I just love...the snap of the maple neck is fantastic...throw in original dragons or uncovered 59/09's and watch out! Great players...fantastic tone machines...I actually dig the all hog ones quite a bit...the alder bodied are pretty darn cool as well...throw in a maple cap and watch out!....if you haven't tried 'em give it a shot...these ain't no budget axe!

I love my CE22! It's a 94 bought in 94 and much like the OP it's the guitar that I grew up with, played in bands with and definately the one guitar I would never consider parting with. It's well worn in, has a dark almost black fret board, the finish is starting to sink and it just oozes character. The dragon pups pack a mighty punch too!

Nice set up. Love the VHT, used to have that amp. A little trick for you to try....turn that global master volume up to about 2-3:00 then use you individual channel volumes to set your actual volume. You will get the "cranked" amp tone at any volume that way.

Here are both of my CE 24's.

My first PRS, this red one from '04. This one has been with me through hell and back, and I don't see myself ever giving it up anytime soon. I don't use it so much as a live guitar now that I have a custom 24 with a blade switch that's easier to use, but it's a staple in most if not all of my recorded material.
https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/35047_1568255929246_7057055_n.jpg

And here's a 1993 CE I managed to snag while I was in undergrad.

HFS and VB in the old CE, they were the first passive pickups that got me to finally ditch EMGs. I would love to check out a Hiland too, there are a lot of unique features on that model.
I am convinced that there is magic in the neck joint of PRS bolt on guitars, my low E string is just HUGE compared to any of my set neck or neck-through guitars.

Great lookin' guitars John! My CE24 always beats out every other guitar I own when it comes to recording. For years I alternated between a myriad of Les Paul's and my one CE, I'm proud to say I have learned my lesson and will never buy a Lester again! (unless it's just for looks.)

This looks like my first PRS. My top wasn't as nice, though. It was Alder/Maple and was one of the best playing guitars I've ever played. A really pretty SC250 came up and the the CE had to go. Now, the SC is gone and I wish I had the CE back.

Sergio, I definitely agree about the alder vs. mahogany. The alders are special.

One of my all time guitar heroes, Ralph Spight from The Victim's Family plays a CE. I was just watching some videos online of him and digging it. Wish I had the spare cash at the moment to pickup a beater CE22 with a wide fat. I've got a nice set of round bobbin 59/09s waiting for the right home. Really don't need another guitar through. Sort of conflicted here.

Thanks Les. It was "spring cleaning" time for guitars over the weekend and I had a spare set of lampshades that needed to go somewhere.. I kinda felt guilty swapping the old knobs out, they've had twenty years of good times on 'em!

I feel you John. Somehow I wound up with seven PRS and SE's over the last year, buying stuff is fun but I think the secret of life is maintenance... This particular CE wasn't getting too much play-time over the past year because of new purchases which is lame. I won't say I forgot about it , but after taking it for a spin again I was reminded how much I love it. ...It's in pretty gnarly shape though!

Serg, those shots are great...you can see all of the "Sergio-love" everywhere on that CE.

I also cannot believe I missed a chance to post pics of my CEs...must be slipping, or near senile...

CantankerousCarl

...so I am going to rectify that...

Not a terribly interesting story, but the 1990 CE Maple Top below was actually my first CE that started the love affair. I was on a GASsing binge, and looking for a sub-1K "beater" and a rather grainy shot of this CE, used for $899, popped up on a major chain website. It was a completely impulse purchase, and went against my better judgement...I did absolutely no research on it, didn't get a serial #, had no idea what year it was, no additional photos...NOTHING. Maybe that was the onset of the senility? Before I got cold feet and asked for pics & a S/N it was on its way to me.

A few days later, it arrived...I opened up the case...OOOhh what do we have here? "WTF is this thing fake I thought?" upon seeing an all-black neckplate with little stamped numbers. Then I saw the electric signature. Then I noticed the distinct lack of bolts under the bridge saddles...

Then, I squealed. An actual squeal. My wife threw open the door and came running downstairs...and I just held up the guitar and pointed to it with a giant s***eating grin on my face. Eyes rolled. Head shook. Back upstairs.

Then I plugged her in. Then, SHE squealed. HOLY CRAP! This was the absolute loudest, bad-assed, rudest, wonderful guitar I had ever heard. And hardly a mark on her.

http://i1261.photobucket.com/albums/ii581/CantankerousCarl/PRS/048.jpg

This axe started a sub-collection of CEs, including another alder / maple top, an all-alder, and a hog / maple top. I still laugh out loud when I pull this one out of the case and plug it in. My other CEs sound amazing, and I do lean firmly toward the alder camp - but this one ROCKS. And for that price I damn near stole it.

I know Serg that my Scarlett one is your favorite, but this is the one that started it all for me, and probably the one I would grab first (at worst second) in the "burning house" scenario...

CE24 fan here as well - I've got two. If it weren't for this model, there's a good chance I never would have bought any PRS guitars, as the other USA models were always too expensive. The first is the first PRS I bought (used, a few years ago). I've Lifeson-o-fied it by replacing the winged tuners with the Phase IIs and putting in a 3-way toggle. I've got the original HFS, but the 59/09 sounds so good so I kept it in there. It's a '97, mahogany/maple.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee266/stylurus/red_CE24_zps914ca092.jpg http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff394/BassDeist/AlexLifesonPRS.jpg

My other CE24 I bought from the person who posted about it in his NGD in this thread:

http://prsguitars.com/forum/showthread.php?6900-Hopefully-a-good-oldie-coming-my-way-%28first-post-introduction%29 (http://prsguitars.com/forum/showthread.php?6900-Hopefully-a-good-oldie-coming-my-way-%28first-post-introduction%29)

I wasn't looking for another guitar, but the price was so good I had to get it. It is in the process of being Lifeson-o-fied as well. Once it's done I'll post some pics.

(Hint: it'll look just like the guitar discussed here: http://prsguitars.com/forum/showthread.php?6404-What-can-you-tell-me-about-Alex-Lifeson-s-black-CE-24)

It's a '93, alder/maple, 7.5 lbs of rawk!

This is now my #1. It is a '97 CE22 that has a bit of history. Supposedly the only CE ever produced with a maple board and black birds, it somehow ended up being owned by Howard Leese for a while, hence the last pic. Originally it had a satin finish but got sent back to the factory at some point to be refinished in a nice gloss black. After playing it with the pu covers for the last few months that I've owned it I decided to take them off to get a bit more edge to the tone, so it now looks like the first pic.

Love that blackbird!! That's truly what I want - not only that one in particular, but a CE 22 with a wide fat neck and maple fretboard. They're so rare, though. I don't want to have to buy a CE and a SAS and swap necks, but I know that has been done.

Nice set up. Love the VHT, used to have that amp. A little trick for you to try....turn that global master volume up to about 2-3:00 then use you individual channel volumes to set your actual volume. You will get the "cranked" amp tone at any volume that way.

I have '98 CE24 in that same color. My first PRS and main guitar for over a decade. Mine's in need of some serious TLC and some fret work, but I'll never sell it and hope to get it rocking again soon. Sorry no pics!

Ship her off to the PTC. She'll come back like new.
