I was ready to pull the trigger on the blue from the photos, but my local store got the tobacco, and I really dug the color on the back and neck. I like to see grain on the back and the neck - even if it's dark. Dug it in person, but was able to save $150 buy getting it online. I was a little nervous about getting it sight-unseen, because the SE tops do vary a bit, but when I opened her up I could not have been more pleased.

Can't wait to see what colors they have for 2013...I really would like to see a vintage or cherry burst, maybe another run of quilts. The UK got some amazing looking limited run SEs for the 245s and Santanas, hope they do some more "adventurous" colors!

Andy: The white Strat plays beautifully. This one I modified myself. Took it all apart and had the body painted like Eric Clapton's Reptile Tour Strat. Changed the electronics in it and added a Semour Duncan humbucker. I had it for many years; then sold it to a collector iin Kazakhstan. It's a beautiful guitar.

I think the combo works very well, i would like to try it on a neck through or set-in neck guitar as i think it would sound even more awesome. Your guitar is heavy mahogany so it has a darkish tone so the aftermath wuold stit well in it. Also depends though what kinda sound you are after and what style you want to play.

Maybe something like the Nailbomb would be better suited (in the bridge), not that the Aftermath cant handle that but its a very dry, midhumped pickup and also very tight. Though a lot of metal is tight some styles require a more organic sound-hence the nailbomb suggestion. The painkiller in the neck would be great but if you want a more buttery pickup in there then the Coldsweat would be good :-) hope that helps?

Btw modestglok26-nice gtr!

I have a Singlecut with trem that I'm wanting to mod but I'm not sure where to start. I think I really want to try the tremel-no out and new pups as well as some locking tuners but I'm still in the learning process as far as mods go. This site is a great place for some amazing ideas.

I swapped out the pups on my Semi-Hollow body SE for a set of ToneRider AC2 Classics. Andrew Cunningham did a nice job with those. They sound great. They have the Alnico 2 magnets in them, so the sustain is a lot longer than the stronger Alnico's. I haven't split the coils yet. Thinking about that. I tried a test with them using alligator clips/wire to ground them together and see how that sounded. Pretty darn good. But, if I really want that Strat sound, I'll just pick up my Strat and play that for now.

Thanks, I wish I still had it.

I had a Tremol-No on that white SE EG. It worked very well.

I'm a big fan of the Planet Waves locking tuners but you do have to drill a new, small hole for the attachment screw.

Nice guitar!

They will fit but you would have to drill new holes for the mounting screws. The Bernie has vintage style tuners with a screw hole directly above and below each tuner. The post holes may have to be slightly enlarged as well.

If you're concerned about tuning stability the stock tuners are more than adequate. The nut will cause more tuning issues than the tuners ever will. I'd replace the nut with a Graph Tech Tusq before any other mods.
Locking tuners are nice for string changing but don't hold tune any better than standard tuners. You can, however, have less wraps on the posts of locking tuners and that does help tuning stability a bit.

Cheers bud!

I'd have to agree with _pete_ in that the tuners are perfectly good. I swapped out the nut for a Graphtech Tusq one almost immediately and that helped with some issues I was having. With a well cut nut and properly installed and stretched in strings the tuning holds very well. I will uprade the tuners one day but only when the current ones give me problems.

I'll second the tuners being good, I swapped out for locking tuners on an older SE and it didn't make much difference until the nut was corrected. Took the locking tuners off later on down the road to use on a different guitar and the stock ones work fine!

Once the nut gets swapped, your tuning issues usually are fixed. The stock tuners are fine. I choose to get locking tuners on my SE's for what I perceive to be better tuning stability and because they are easy to string...(I'm quite lazy).

andy474x
11-28-2012, 08:10 PM
What specs are you looking for? I think the pickups are the SE HFS/VB set, I measured the resistance on my SECU 24 and they're very close to the USA HFS/VB set, so quite hot. If you want a lot of output these are good ones, so maybe give them a shot before you switch to the EMG's... of course it's all up to you, if you know you want the EMG's go ahead and do it. As for the rest of it - mahogany body, maple cap and veneer, maple 3 piece neck, 25" scale, rosewood board.

Just MAJORLY upgraded my SE Akesson - I always thought this guitar would look sharp with covered pickups, so I put a set in, and it does! Oh... they also happen to be 57/08's!!! :0 FINALLY. I've been wanting and waiting for a set of these since they came out (in fact you may have heard me whine about it on here). These particular pickups are an early, non-engraved set. I got them from a very nice guy over on TGP, apparently he bought them from a friend who is a tester for Paul and these were sent to him as a prototype when production had just started (or something to that effect). Anyways, KILLER sound from these things. I already loved the tone of the guitar itself, something about it is a bit better than the stock 245's to my ear, but these pickups put it over the top. They're not high output, yet still powerful somehow - LOTS of punch, very balanced, not too bright in the highs. I'm especially surprised by the pickups in combination, they're matched really well and sometimes I don't find both pickups useable at the same time, but these things nail it. They are very good guitars, even in standard form, as you;ve seen mine is quite heavily modified and i love it, its gets gigged every weekend and is a joy to play every time!

I picked up a used Tremonti this weekend, it's on its way from Guitar Center in Englewood Colorado. I have a friend in the Denver area who checked it out for me. He said it was nearly flawless. As you can see, the price was right, too!

I will probably pick up a Tonepros adjustable bridge for it, string it with 13s and tune it B to B like my baritone. I have a couple sets of really great pickups kicking around that I'm going to try in it, and am curious what's installed in there now.

Looks like it could possibly have USA Tremonti pups. That would make that an incredible deal.

Here's my SE with it's brother:

http://i47.tinypic.com/2agr9jp.jpg

Funny (now) story is that the day I got this guitar (SE) I was in Seattle on vacation. I actually had got off a cruise ship there headed home on a flight but wanted to go to Guitar Center and look around. I never had owned or had any experience with PRS guitars prior, but the SE was drawing my attention, I played it and loved it right away. I bought the guitar, headed back to the hotel when I noticed I was coughing up blood. I quickly started feeling really, really bad. So I ended up in the ER on IVs with pneumonia. I still flew home the next day, with the guitar in the captain's closet in a gig bag. There was bad turbulence on the flight and along with feeling miserable I was worried sick about the guitar. Turns out it was fine and I got better!

I have modded it quite a bit, some I had to do. For one, the nut had some "sticking" issues where a string would catch and go out of tune. I ended up having a new nut put on along with locking tuners. I also decked the trem and blocked it. The pickups were just something I wanted to try. I found the stock pickups a bit muddy so I installed Seymour Duncan Jazz and JB set as well as new electronics.

It's a great guitar and really awesome workhorse. I also am not as precious about it as I am my 10 Top CU24.

It's a Custom 22 in Grey Black.

Hi Mike
Where did you find a purple Custom 24 SE ?

You can get them in the UK... I think it's a limited edition finish and possibly a UK exclusive as I couldn't find anyone in the US selling one in that colour. Picked mine up from PMT music in Manchester.

This thread is giving me a lot of gas for a new SE. I've had a couple in the past but sold them. Right now, really interested in the Catanese model (in red) but possibly the Marsden or 245 models too. The Catanese would be more of a shredder/heavier type guitar that I don't have in my arsenal right now. I love the plain ebony board on it too. I don't like overly flashy guitars for the most part. I also don't have anything with EMG pickups in it, wonder if I'll like them.

Here's my first year Tremonti SE.
I installed a PRS Deep Dish II pickup in the bridge position but it looked really beat up, so I found a set of EMG style covers to help clean up the look.
I also refinished the headstock with a PRS signature logo.
This guitar has the best action and the best sound of all of my guitars, with the exception of my '86 Custom 24. ;)

I also have a SE 245 in route that I just purchased and I'm looking at the new Tremonti Custom as well.
I LOVE these guitars!

^^That looks sweet. I'm debating between the SE 245 and a SE Catanese model. Likely with the 245 I would change pickups to maybe the SD JB/Jazz combo. Whereas with the Catanese I would leave stock. I like that Tonepros bridge on the Catanese too. There's a good deal on the 245 I might take soon if it's still around, around $400 basically new. The Catanese is a bit more. Are these two models the same thickness? I prefer thicker, like an LP. Sort of a must for me.

How did you do the headstock on this Tremonti model? Looks very slick.

Thanks for the compliment.
I just received shipment of my SE 245 today and I really love it!
I had never played one before so I was a little skeptical of the 24-1/2" scale and the "wide fat" neck, but once I picked it up and started playing it, it was VERY hard to put down! It was like playing a guitar I've had for years ... very comfortable. I changed the strings to 10-46 gauge and adjusted the action just a hair and it's perfect. Intonation is spot on. I was also looking at the new Tremonti Custom because of the "wide thin" neck (like my first year Tremonti), but now I'm really thinking about buying another SE 245.

From what I can tell, the SE Catanese also has the thicker body, the same "wide fat" neck carve, EMG pickups, Tonepros bridge, and it's 25" scale.
It looks like a great guitar too but I'm not a big EMG fan and I really like the bird inlays.

I found a company that made the signature logos many years ago. They no longer make them for obvious reasons.
Looking back, I wish I would have bought a bunch of them. They were really nice quality gold metallic vinyl. VERY nice.
Anyway, I just sanded off the Tremonti logo, repainted it black, applied the logo, clear coated (acrylic urethane), wet sanded and buffed it out.
Initially, the logo was too long so I had to cut and paste each name separately. I'm happy with how it turned out though. :)

The SE 245 will have some different colors for 2013, correct? I see Sam Ash is "closing out" their tobacco and white models, although no price decrease, ugh. Musicians Friends mentions a dark cherry burst, which I might have to see, that could be nice, as long as it isn't a clown burst color, which it sounds like it won't be. They also list Orange, but nothing else to describe it. They list both colors in stock, but there are no pics of it. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/prs-se-245-electric-guitar

I liked the Tortoise Shell color, but that seems to be discontinued now. Black and tobacco burst seem to be carried over. Anyone have pics of the two new colors?

Question about scale length. Two SE models I'm looking at, either the 245 (or Marsden, pretty similar spec wise) or the SE Catanese, have different scale lengths, 24.5" and 25" respectively. Do you really notice a big difference between the two? I play a LP, SG but also a Tele and JM, and really don't have much issue with changing from one to another. Curious if you think there's much of a difference going on with this half inch. Pickups are different too, since the Catanese has EMG's in it, and an ebony fretboard. Thanks.

It has been totally revamped for 2012/13.

What brand are the locking tuners, and were they a direct fit, or did you have to do some drilling?

Boze
01-10-2013, 09:48 PM
No drilling prsguitarman101,......Schaller locking tuners are a drop-in replacement. I DID opt for the smaller button tuners however,......I just think they match the over-all size of the headstock better....

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e127/Boze63/PRS%20gtr%20mods/Tuners1.jpg

However, the actual height of the tuning post is rather short due to where it comes in contact with the base on the back-side of the headstock. This results in a much shorter post on the tuning side. It's still very workable, ..just throws you of a bit when they are side by side....

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e127/Boze63/PRS%20gtr%20mods/Tuners2.jpg

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e127/Boze63/PRS%20gtr%20mods/Tunerinstall1.jpg

But as you can see, the body of the Schaller's are almost a mirror image to the PRS tuners....

No, there are not staggered posts. What happened was that I chose to swap out the top tuners 1st,....to see how they look & work with the shorter post,....then proceed to removed the PRS tuners (the one that's missing the nut & post-ring) a pr at a time....

Here is my new se custom 24. Different in about every way from my 245. It ways about nothing wich really surprised me. Guess its the thinner body and trem cavity. The neck is just as people told me like a wide fat just a little thinner. Not at all like my ibanez so that was a relief. Sounds completely different got so used to the sound of my 245 it was quite a difference.

The color is not quite right in the pic. Its more grey than it shows in the pic. Most pics I found made it look black with a little grey mixed in. This is more like an old worn pair ob black jeans so its a great 3D effect.

Is this a 2013 model then? How much thinner is the body over the 245? I really like the heft and beveled top of the 245, and was kind of hoping the SE24 was similar. The neck sounds good though, although I dig the wide fat as well. This one might be my next guitar, if I decide to sell my SG, just not sure yet. How do the split coils sound? I like that feature a lot, especially for the neck pickup.

Site deleted my post as I tried to submit.

Its not a 2013 color but came in stock long after the 2013 colors were available to ship. The serial number is 19000 higher than my 245 so I am assuming its factory fresh.

The new colors are vintange Sunburst like the bernnie model and black cherry. Was going to go sunburst but wanted that 7 string that is coming out and it looks nice in vintage sunburst.

Did a quick measure so at the bottom strap button the 245 - 2 1/8" the 24 1 5/8". So that's a lot more wood on the 245 with the single cut and extra 1/2 of mahogany.

Haven't had enogh time to get a good feel for the sound yet. Not to familiar with all the tone terminology. The 245 is a lot thicker sound. Not to say the 245 sound like a drop tuned custom. Just a lot warmer sound.

For the split coil I don't have much to compare it to. There is the volume drop of course since your only using half of the pickup. The 24 definitely has a more strat sound than the split megadrive at the brige in my ibanez. Pluss you loose that slightly out of sync stereo sound you get from picking up the sound from seperate places on the string. Sounds so much clearer and you can hear you picking much better.

I love the split option but think I may put a pair of tripple shots in so I can get individual split/series/parallel instead of the all or nothing push pull setup. That and it goes without having to drill any holes into the body for mini switches.

Hi... The name is Joe. I'm new to PRS, but old to guitars in general. I picked up 2 SEs at the end of last year. (sorry for the bad cell phone pics)

2008 Singlecut SE (used)

I tried out and fell in love with it immediately. I bought it as a birthday present to myself.

2012 Tremonti SE

That my wife bought me a the next day, because she wanted me to have a NEW guitar (this is after yelling at me for having too many the day before).

I can't believe I waited this long to try a PRS... Now I'm gassing for a Maryland made one. God help me.

If your wondering about the necks they are a good amount different. The wide fat is a soft V shape. So if you like to play with you thumb on the low e side of the neck its got a great anchor spot for your thumb. But if you move your thumb down to get the high e an have your thumb at the height of the arch it can feel a but over sized.

Now for the wide thin. Imagine if the wide fat was a rubber ball or dogs sqweek toy. If you presses down on the top the sides would bulge out. So the wide thin isn't so much thin as it has a flatter arch in the middle and thicker around the edges than the wide fat. So if you keep you thumb in the center of the neck the wide thin will give you a better anchor there.

Not sure which one I like more yet. Love the feel of the wide fat over the wide thin with the different anchor point. I have smaller hands so the wide thin leaves a little more room for my fingers to reach around.

I see that MF has the SE Custom 24 in a nice Vintage Sunburst color. This color isn't listed on the PRS website, and I haven't seen it in other places either. Is this an older color then? Or new and not listed here on the PRS website yet? This isn't Tobacco Sunburst either, which is nice but darker and more common.

That's what I have been trying to figure out. They list exclusive model on their site. So I think it is a special run just for musiciansfriend. Though its usually only one color. Another site got a special run on splated maple custom 24s and santanas. Was late to the game on that one so they didn't have many 24s left.

Was going to go with the vintage burst but I wanted that upcoming 7 string in that color. They got a grey/black in at the last minute. Looks nice now will look even better once some fade sets in.

Some nice looking guitars there. Do you think the Gibson '57s are a big improvement over the stock SE 245 pickups? Because I was debating that. I have an Epiphone LP Tribute that comes with coil tapped Gibson '57s in it, and comparing back and forth, I'm not sure they are all that much better. I do like the neck pickup using the coil/single tapped option, especially with cleans. But otherwise, the 245s really hold their own, especially when gain is added, I didn't see any improvement with the '57s.

I play through a high gain amp and the SE245 pickups just sound a tad more harsh to my ears.
The Gibson '57 Classics just sound smoother IMO.

Don't get me wrong, the SE245's are good pickups.
It may all just depend on the amp you're using and the type of music you play.
It's all just personal preference, I guess.

Makes sense. I don't use a high gain amp, a Fender Humboldt Blues Jr. But I do some use higher gain fuzz pedals, sounds pretty good with 'em. I might sell the Epiphone without the '57's in it, put those in my 245, depends on the price I can get for it. Something to consider...

The same pickups can sound different in different guitars. You're playing an Epi, an inferior instrument, compared to the PRS SE. So, it might be a case of the 57 classics making the Epi sound better than it should, or in other words, the pickups don't sound very good because the guitar doesn't sound very good. I don't see why you shouldn't put your best pickups in your best guitar. That seems like a no brainer.

on the other hand, I like to suggest a magnet swap in the SE pickups before replacing. If the SE245 pickups sound too harsh, swap in an Alnico 2 or unoriented alnico 5 magnet. Especially the bridge pickups can be sort of compressed and nasally sounding, swapping magnets can open them up and make them sing, and it only costs a few bucks and takes a few minutes to do.

I dunno, the Epi Tribute model is a pretty nice model. Mostly Gibson spec'd, minus the nitro finish. The PRS does play easier though, could be the thinner gauge strings on it. I'll say that the Epi stays in tune better, whether it's because of the nut, or the better Grover tuners it comes with. Also a hsc and it's $50 less. But I still really like the 245, definite keeper.

Yeah I'll probably have someone do it for me, I have a great vintage guitar store a block from my office, and they have a nice collection of some of the earliest PRS guitars. Their tech is awesome. I might get an SE Custom 24 next, and have both nuts changed at the same time.

The Tusq nuts are precut.
All I had to do was sand the bottom of the nut a little to get the action right.
It's pretty easy if you just leave the strings on the guitar and just check your progress as you go.

The Epi Tributes are pretty good guitars. I tried a few out when I was on my quest for a new singlecut before I got the Bernie. They (arguably) put a lot of the lower priced Gibsons to shame, and you do get a lot for the money with them. But out the box the SE's just nailed it and (crucially) had better fretwork and a seemingly better build quality overall. The SE seemed worth it's price. Also, once you get 'under the hood' you see the quality differences too. Lift the neck pup and look at the join on the SE's. Quality!!! The Epi may seem to have the higher quality parts but the SE is built better and that wins out in my book.

It's just the nut that lets them dow a touch IMHO. That's where the tuning issues are coming from and possibly the only 'must do' upgrade on an SE. I may change to locking tuners on my SE C24 because I want to make use of the trem quite a bit so anything I can do to improve tuning stability I will. With my Bernie and my Strat the Tusq nuts where enough for stable tuning with the stock tuners.

Check that all 6 of bridge pivot screws are adjusted properly. They have to all be at the exact same height so the bridge travels freely. Set the bridge so it floats evenly at 1/16" off the body.
Doing that, along with a good nut and minimum string winds on the tuners, should keep it right in tune.

I have lockers on mine but more for easy string changing than anything else.

Interesting you say that. I have a 245, got it recently and love it. I don't spend much time playing it unplugged, but the other night I did. I wouldn't say it resonates all that well unplugged - maybe due to the light gauge strings. But when I plug it in, it sustains like crazy. Much better than my Gibson SG (which will now be sold) and better than my Epi Tribute LP - although that one is pretty good too. I think the thicker body of the 245 helps in this respect.

How an electric sounds acoustically doesn't always translate when plugged in. I've got a Squier Strat that weighs a ton and sounds dead acoustically but sounds great plugged in. Just plays like shat! My Fender Strat sounds fantastic acoustically and when plugged in. The Bernie's between the two but amazing plugged in and the SE 24 is like the Fender tapped but slightly muddy in the neck in HB mode.

I agree that body resonance doesn't always transfer over to great sound when you're plugged in since pickups come into play then. But I think having resonant wood very generally means that the quality of wood is decent. Of course you have to take into consideration construction and bridge materials, strings...etc. But I thought it interesting that the 245's really sounded lifeless.

You should like it if you like thin necks.
It is my favorite SE next to my new Tremonti Custom which has the same neck, but without the extra access to all of the frets.
I play the 24 and the Tremonti more than my SG which cost 3X more.

It is.
If you have a YouTube with with the s, it will not show either, so leave the s out.

You should like it if you like thin necks.
It is my favorite SE next to my new Tremonti Custom which has the same neck, but without the extra access to all of the frets.
I play the 24 and the Tremonti more than my SG which cost 3X more.

I know what you mean about waiting, I had to do it three times already for all of my SEs.
Now I am waiting for my 408 MT to come into the same shop.

I'm already in love with it! After doing a TON of research, I found that this particular guitar had ALL of the features I was looking for in a first electric guitar that should be playable for a good 10 - 20 years or so :D Being that it was a PRS just sweetened the pot. Then I was able to try it out at a guitar show around my parts and it felt and sounded like heaven for me! It was a perfect match. I am a fan of thin necks for sure, since I do not have the biggest of hands. I'm glad to hear that it gets more use than your more expensive guitars! Makes me feel like I made the right choice.

And I'm not the most patient of people, so this one time has just been particularly excruciating lol. I don't know if I could do it three more times lol. Congrats on the 408 MT....very drool worthy! Question: does each mini-toggle split each humbucker? That's what I'd assume, but I didn't read anything about it.

The SE Custom 24 has a .25' longer scale length than my Gibsons 24.75" scale, but the PRS is just so much easier to play.
Also the neck seems a little shorter on the PRS, so I do not have to reach down as far for the first three frets where I chord the most.

Yes, the 408 stands for 4 pickups (when split), 8 different sounds.
The guitar is overkill for me, but I have wanted a USA one for awhile.
Not sure is the pattern thin neck on it is as thin as the SEs wide/thin or not, I am hoping it is.
A little thicker will not matter though, as long as it is not as thick as my SE Santana.
That neck is a little thick for me.
It plays nice, I just prefer a thinner neck.

Hope you get your SE soon, and let us know how you like it.

Yeah Corey knows all too well about waiting for a guitar.

Glad the Tremonti was worth the wait!

Oh man...I thought the SE CU 24 would be my first and last electric....but the 408 sounds like absolute perfection for me! lol I'd love to be able to go half humbucker half single coil....hmmmm...

When I started playing a year ago, I had a friend tell me that a guitar collection is never complete...I'm starting to think he might be right!!

Question: How many guitars does a guitar player need?

Answer: Just ONE more.
