Les' 6 Stages of Guitar Ownership

I was thinking about GAS, and realized that as with other psychological events, there are...

The Six Stages Of Guitar Ownership:

    1. Disbelief - You can’t believe how cool this guitar is, and you MUST have it.
    2. Honeymoon - Is this the most incredible, amazing guitar you’ve ever owned, or what?
    3. Guilt - Uh oh, the bill came. You shouldn’t have bought it and you’re a bad person.
    4. Acceptance - it’s Your #1 - Oh yeah, it’s a great axe.
    5. Indifference - Just A Guitar - It’s your gigging guitar. It could use a polishing up.
    6. Negotiation - eBay.

NOTE: It has come to this writer's attention that some folks are taking this satirical post intended to poke fun at our guitar culture as though I am being serious.

Hey! Wake up! It's supposed to be lighthearted satire!

Is this an omen? Did you just use literary foreshadowing? If so, your 9th grade English teacher would be so proud.

    Hahaha!

My 9th grade English teacher loved me.

But no, not foreshadowing. Just trying to be exceedingly clever and failing miserably.

The Six Stages of my first PRS Ownership:

1.Disbelief - What is that hanging on the wall of GC? I've never seen birds on the neck. I'm blowing my whole tax return but I'm getting it anyway.
2.Honeymoon - I don't even know what model it is but I'm loving every minute I play it. Can't play it enough.
3.Guilt - Never happened. Not even a second. Oh, I paid cash.
4.Acceptance - From the first time I played it...it's still my favorite (it's in my avatar).
5.Indifference - Hasn't happened. Hope it never does.
6.Negotiation - eBay? C'mon Man! It will be burried with me.

Sorry Les but your theory is flawed. 1 decide what your next prs shall be. 2 change your mind if you find a great deal on a different prs. 3 purchase. 4. Revisit step 1

    Very different for me:
    1) lust
    2) denial - when I think I can resist the inevitable and forget that it exists
    3) rationalization - justifying the inevitable
    4) acceptance - just buy it
    5) elation
    6) possessiveness - I rarely let go

Sorry guys, but I my information directly from Freud in 1924.

It is well known that Freud was, in addition to being the founder of modern psychiatry, a guitar enthusiast and one of the original members of The Beatles.

I don't know, Les, my stages feel different. Mainly because I don't really go looking for guitars.

Occasionally I think "Gee, I really wish I had a guitar that does [whatever]." If I think that on three separate occasions, I get in touch with the builder who is most likely to build an instrument that will do that. (funny, I use the same principle with kitchen gadgets: I don't buy it until I've wanted it on three separate occasions)

The rest of the time nowadays, guitars find me rather than vice versa. A guitar will show up at my door because some builder or dealer just has to know what I think of that guitar.Yeah, of course, the builder/dealer is probably well aware of my propensity for writing the check when I like something.

The whole "#1" or "favorite" thing is somewhat of a foreign concept to me. I own too many extraordinary guitars, most of which have some sort of strong personal resonance, to have a #1 or a favorite. The upside is: I have a lot of über-cool guitars that I'm very fond of. The downside is: it's a ***** when it's time to decide which three I'm going to bring to a gig.

    1) Always lookin', Always wantin'.
    2) Get some cheddar.
    3) Purchase while drunk on ebay.
    4) Play it for a minute, declare what a great guitar it is to you guys, and remark about how nothing needs changing.
    5) Mod/spray paint/bedazzle/carve my name on it/customize and basically ruin any chance of a future sale.
    6) Repeat.

Dude! I know! And you nailed the Freudian thing. I tried to come up with a parallel set of stages for how it all goes down chez KD and just couldn't do it. I'll try again later under the influence of a couple of KD-strength margaritas.

In the meantime, don't you have some music to listen to or something?
