Were the CE models the forerunners of the SE?
Not to my knowledge. The CEs are/were a high quality US made instrument (not that SEs are not a high quality instrument, they are generally excellent). Just a different style with the bolt on neck. All the hardware was similar to if not identical to other US models made at the same time.Originally Posted by MisterE

In some ways.....kinda. CE's gradually became "cheaper" versions of the Custom model by adopting the similar materials and features. However from the introduction of the CE series, they were just completely different animals altogether. If you don't have a CE yet MisterE, nows the time! CE's are my favorites.
It was my impulse buy of the year... saw it on Craigslist and had to have it....such a versatile guitar.... not quite a Strat or an LP but can pretty much mimic both... Even as a jazzy sounding guitar it works!
