    The Deep Dish 2 Pickup

I absolutely adore these old PRS pickups. Every once in a while I see people looking for info on them so here's a post for the record.

    Deep Dish 2 (Treble) Specifications:
    DC Res:11.5k
    Turns: 7800
    Wire: 42 Gauge
    Magnets: Alnico 2
    Cover: No
    Color: Black Bobbins & nickel
    Compatibility: 5-way rotary & push/pull
Era: Late 80's to very early 90's
Mate: I have never seen a DD2 Bass & there is no mention of one in old marketing materials
Precursor: The original Deep Dish had alnico 5 magnets
Similar to: As I recall, the Chainsaw pickup had almost identicle specs but ceramic magnets instead of alnico.

    Description from PRS Marketing collateral:
The Alnico driven coils of this pickup are wound deeper and with more turns. Similar in sound to a P90 single coil, the tone is big and warm with nice high end. The Deep Dish II is the perfect bridge pickup for fattening up the tone without losing clarity.

Alternate Description from the PRS Website (under discontinued pickups):
The alnico driven coils of this pickup are wound deeper and with more turns than a vintage humbucking pickup. Similar in sound to an old P-90 single coil - big and warm with clear high end. The Deep Dish II is the perfect bridge pickup for fattening up the tone without losing clarity or adding unwanted grind and harshness. Mississippi Queen to jazz.

    My $.02:
This pickup sounds fantastic through my '64 Twin, EF86/EL84 amp, and PRS 25th Anniversary amp. It shimmers when I want it to shimmer and rips when I drive the amps. It responds surprisingly well to tonal changes via the volume pot. It cleans up extremely well even with a slight roll-off. When the coils are split, the drop in volume is nearly imperceptible and the thick single coil tone is as rich and usable as the full bucker.

What's the use in hot women if you can't pick them up?

Interesting pickup. 42AWG wire wound to 11.5k.....that is ALOT of turns for that gauge of wire!! My guess is with those specs and an alnico2 magnet it would be a very warm sounding pickup!

I have a DD2 in my Tremonti SE.
Man, that pickup REALLY brought that guitar to life!
Should I ever sell the guitar, that pickup is staying with me.

Do you know if the private stock team would recreate this pickup if you wanted to spec it out on a new build??

You used the word "magnets" instead of "magnet". Are there more than one magnet? Are the magnets the pole pieces like a Fender Wide Range humbucker or a Fralin Twangmaster?
