You are going to have different amount of power being sent to the 2 different cabs. EM7 has explained this in detail on both this and the VR forum...I'd do a search for his posts.

When you mix an 8ohm cab and 16ohm cab, the actual Impediance Load would be 5.3 Ohms. so if you had to do that i would set the switch to 4 Ohms... the best thing to do is try to swap your 8ohm speaker to someone who has a 16ohm version...
