(The PRS site says Specials had HSH pickup configurations, mine has a serial # of 9 7516.) However, the tone is incredible, especially for its light weight, it's an awesome guitar indeed.

    That's not a special. Its a standard.

It seems to have the trem up-route that mine from that era has as well. I believe the "specials" had a different pickup configuration.

Markie, don't even know where to begin on that collection. Simply outstanding! Early standards in opaque finishes are my favorite PRS. It's good to know that there are still a lot of great ones out there.

JD, love the pearl white. This may be a longshot, but was that the one Gruhn Guitars had for sale early last year? (If so, I had the pleasure of playing it. What a great one, I would have given a kidney for that thing!)

It is signed "Special" inside the trem cavity under the clear coat so it's definitely a Special

Wow! That is one faded royal blue! I wonder if a faded RB like this one was the inspiration for the color Faded Blue Jean??

Does it say anything in the treble pickup cavity? A word under the trem doesnt neccesarily mean thats the model.

Here's my 1985 Vintage Yellow Custom:

Here's a 1985 "PRS Guitar" also known as a Pre-Standard. The color is Black Pearl or Pearl Black. I've heard both, and don't know which is correct.

Bringing up the rear of my 85s, is another PRS Guitar...this one in Gloss Black:

Next up is a 1986 Custom in Vintage Yellow:

And lastly, here is a 1986 PRS Guitar/ Pre-Standard. KILLER guitar, but she' currently for sale for a steal on VR and my Reverb.com store.
