Case locks - any body use them

My latest private stock came with new latches, replacing the old brief case like combination locks with nice robust latches. The center latch has a key. I like the new latches much better.

It made me wonder if any one locks their cases. I feel like doing so would make it less convenient for me to pull out the guitar of the moment and in the unlikely event of a theft encourage the thief to wreck the case to get at what is inside and maybe damage the contents while they are at it.

I've used both the key and combination kind when moving them but usually not when keeping them at home. They mostly just keep an honest man honest as they won't stop a thief, but if a guitar is advertised used with a broken latch, I suspect it's been stolen so there is some value in it after all.

"Professor Les, is there any reason for guitar case makers to include locks on cases any more?"

"I'm glad you asked. Yes, there are reasons. Here's an example: Let's say you're a teenager, and the only thing you own with a lock on it is your guitar case. And you're wondering, "Where can I store my weed that my Mom won't find it?" Now you have your answer."

    "Any other reasons?"

"Sure. What if you're a musician on tour, and you need someplace to store your weed when you're in a hotel room and don't want the house detective to find it? The perfect solution is to put it in your locked guitar case."

"What about preventing the case from opening for other reasons?"

"Well, I suppose that a locked case would be less likely to accidentally open when you're carrying it, in which case your weed won't fall out of the accessory compartment."

"No, I meant for the safety of the guitar."

    "People put guitars in cases?"

Perhaps lock it while it is in transit as luggage (I kind of dread that thought, but have needed to do so on occasion) - just so it doesn't accidentally open while being handled.
