I like to mix it up with on the spot improv and also play note for note, but it depends on the song because some solos you have to play by the book...It also keeps things interesting for you,your band and your audience..Everything I played at the last 2 PRS Experiences in the Tent A Jam Sessions was improv..... http://www.youtube.com/user/acaciaentertainment

Thanks, Les. My younger brother is fairly well-known in the "ambient guitar" genre so I've generally soft-pedaled my own leanings in that direction. But every so often that side of me wants to come out and play. So I indulge it.

I have a feng shui client that's talking about collaborating on an audio project with "vibrational" properties.... "Is that C major I'm hearing, or is it blue?"

In my band, if its a short solo, it's usually more of a melody line than a solo. Those I stick to my plan because I wrote the melody to be just that, a specific melody line. Sometimes it's based off the chorus or another memorable part of the song. If its a longer solo, I usually have some set parts, then some other spots that I have room for improv. The improv spots typically come back to a planned part, even if its just a few notes that I feel are important.

I definitely improv whenever I was with jazz combos and jazz ensemble in undergrad, and I do so at times when I'm trying to flesh out what to do for the lead parts of songs I write until something clicks.
