    Sea Changes

Today is my last day at my current job, been here 7.5 years and although I enjoy it, I felt (a while ago) it was time to move onto something different, a new challenge etc. I can't quite tell you what my new job will be for various reasons (not on a public forum anyway), but it's going to be a whole lot more exciting and fulfilling, and I won't be stuck behind a desk all day.

It's pretty daunting, the next 1.5 years are going to be very full on, with a lot of training, and a lot of time away from my partner and baby, but it's all going to be worth it lifestyle and financial wise. I bit the bullet and did it, now I'm at the business end!

Got me thinking about sea changes, I've had one before when I left the full-time Navy, and now it's time for another. Funnily enough I spent 6 years in the Navy, and it was about 2 years ago when I felt I needed to move on with life, so it's a bit of a 6 year cycle for me (7 year itch?).

What about you guys? Have you had sea changes? If so, how did they work out? Do you want a sea change? If so, what's stopping you?

The fact that you have gone from one job to another is impressive, despite trying for the last 2 years plus the 6 months when i was on the sick, I cannot get a job (i could get into the whole political argument but won't cos Shawn or Hans will come down on the thread) There is so much bias and prejudice from employers when they ask for a medical history and any meds that you take etc.

I'd love to set up my own business and be my own boss but I just don't have the capital and no investor will touch somebody with no prior business background.

Yes, I am in the midst of a "Sea Change" and while difficult, it is the only way to move forward as my development as a human being.

Interesting you can see the pattern of your cycles in 6-7 years, just google "seven year change"... it's really interesting to see how many cultures and schools of thought there are on the subject.

I been doing the same crap all of my life, save 22 months of "Oil Patch" work in 82-83. I suppose my next change will be staring at the inside of a Casket..........

Edit: Oops I forgot............... make that staring at the inside of an Urn

In an interesting twist of fate, the inscription on the urn will read, "I should have played them all."

I've changed my work dramatically several times. Part of it is because I get bored easily, part of it is because I have a low tolerance for unnecessary bureaucracy, and part of it is because I like to keep my skills fresh. I've cycled between hands on work and being bossy a couple of times, and while it is my nature to be bossy, I find doing 'real' work leaves me more emotional energy for the people I care about.

I've come to the conclusion that we all go through sea changes of different kinds. Some we control, some we don't.

I've tried to control mine. An oversized ego is a terrible thing to waste.

After this past weekend at Markie's, I've been thinking about a sex change too. Glad to see I'm not alone.

The urn thing reminded me of stuff we found after my father passed away that he lovingly stored away for "special occasions," but never used.

He must've been waiting for one hell of a special occasion.

Interesting. I read this post yesterday. After some treadmill meditation yesterday evening I realized that is was seven years between getting out of college and working full time (and playing in bands almost full time as well) until I finally decided I wanted to have kids. So, I guess I'm 3 1/2 years from the next big change.
