Hello all,

I have an Epiphone Dot Deluxe, which is by far the cheapest guitar in my collection. But I have to admit, I do kind of like it. It wouldn't stay in tune worth a crap when I got it, so I replaced the JUNK plastic nut with a Tusq, which worked wonders. It stays in tune now, and definitely sounds better.

I know new pickups and wiring would be a great upgrade, but I'm not sure I want to spend a whole lot on such a cheap guitar. I do have a spare set of Fralin PAFs lying around, as well as pots and caps, but I don't want to put $300 worth of pickups in a $400 guitar that I don't really play a whole lot...it's just a fun, little diversion.

I've read wiring and pickup changes are a real pain in the butt with 335-style guitars, so I only want to do this once. Which brings me to the point of my post. I do have a few pickups lying around that really aren't worth a whole lot, but should be a whole lot better sounding than the Epiphone "57 Classics" that came in the guitar. (If they sounded like Gibson 57 Classics, I'd leave them alone!) I have a couple good bridge pickups to choose from, but not a whole lot of cheap-but-decent neck pickups. One that I am thinking of using is an old PRS Vintage Bass. The VB isn't my favorite neck pickup by a long shot, but they're certainly not bad. Have any of you tried them in anything like this? What do you all think?

As far as other upgrades, I'm definitely going to get a lightweight aluminum tailpiece for it. I've always liked the tonal improvement with those, I'd like to install an ABR-1 bridge, but I'm not going to go to the expense. It has one of those metric Nashville Tune-O-Matic bridges, so I'm considering a TonePros replacement. Have any of you tried those? Seem like a good idea?

Any other recommendations?
