Coil tapped DGT vs. McCarty
I read that Grissom spent quite a bit of time dialing in the single coil sound of his DGT pup's. I would imagine that the sound, as compared to the McCarty, would be louder, overall brighter and punchier when engaged as a single coil. Anyone in the know?
The DGT coil tap runs the side of the pickup that gets grounded in the split through a resistor. The end result is that the overall output from the coil being split is closer to what a standard single coil pickup would be and that makes for a more convincing single coil tone. The McCarty split coil wiring does not include the resistor. You can see the DGT wiring diagram on the PRS support site under schematics. Look for the DGT 2012 diagram.
Thanks for the info CF.
Looks like they added the resistor to the MC58 in 2012.

Interesting, I hadn't looked at the MC58 schematic.
