    Guilty pleasure guitars: What's yours?

So I asked this question on another forum ages ago and got some interesting results so here goes:

WHat are your guilty pleasure guitars? By that, I mean what model do you love that you know either looks terrible, is so cliche or simply gaudy that you know you shouldn't but you do? You don't have to own it, simply something you've seen that you often think you'd like but won't for whatever reason.

Mine will always be the Gibson Zakk Wylde Bullseye - I think it looks fuggin' badass but you can't help but know it's association (in the guitar world anyway, silly kids just go cool it's a target sheesh!) and you'll never get away from that. To some extent a Gibson double neck has that same effect (you know who i'm talking about!).

    So what are yours?

Guilty pleasure as in you own one? Or just really want to own one even tho it's off the deep end? BTW that guitar is a total badass to play if you're into the heavier stuff (I am and I've owned one. LOL).

I love the Ibanez S series. Like the RG's people look at them and just think speed shred stuff, but the build quality on the Korean ones is amazing, stick a set of Duncans in it and it is hugely versatile. The Wizard necks are really nice, especially if you have small hands.

My other continuing love is Parker Nitflys. I personally like the love it/loath it body style, really comfortable for the 'fuller figured' gentleman and the carbon glass wrapped necks feel amazing.
Again with a decent set of Duncans, the Fishman piezo system and a good double amp setup it covers a lot of bases. IMHO of course.

Either/or or even what have you owned that you got rid off because of the same reason.

I did own an Epi one of these in my early days and I often joke about getting another - especially since they now come with the 81/85 as standard!

Chris - excluding the paint job - I could like that. THe maple board probably brightens up a dark guitar!

That's a cool one Sleary. What did you make of it? I played one last weekend in store and liked the overall feel of it. I found alot of the fretwire to be overhanging the upper frets tho. Maybe it was a sloppy release (by gibson?? surely not ) It was fat as hell and sounded like a monster.

It sounded fun I have to say, but I'd be out with the 1000 Grit and shaping the front and back cuts as well as the upper fret cutaway. I always think the gibson is too abrupt where the PRS chamfer is much kinder to flying up the neck.

Ibanez swirled stuff and a few Jems...namely the floral ones and the crazy colors like neon green and neon pink.

Mine has very smooth fret ends, no cut hands and love the neck on it. I had the nut filed and put 12-52's on it. It's in drop C and sounds massive. I do really like it however trying to compare it to my dgt is like apples to oranges. Nothing even comes close to my dgt, still a love affair with it lol.

    Absolutely, they're such different beasts.

I still don't get why it's a guilty pleasure - there's nothing garish about it, it might not be everyone's cup of tea but there's absolutely nothing to be guilty about with that guitar

Here are four that are sorta over the bling top:

    1. EMPIRE. I think these are underrated. They are really well made (by the main luthier of BC Rich in the old days, so I'm told), and the fretboard vine inlay was done by Ron Thorn. They play and sound good, too.

    2. BC RICH MOCKINGBIRD. I sent this maple spalted burl to Bernie Rico, Sr. It's one of the last Mockingbirds made by him, and he signed the back of the headstock. He hadn't commissioned guitars using a customer's wood before, but he was pretty fired up about this maple. The wings are solid 1 piece maple. I'm not really a fan of the tone of Mockingbirds, but it is a cool piece.

    3. BRIAN MOORE MC-1 "MANNY'S". MC-1s are unique designs with their carbon bodies. There were to be 10 of these Manny's Music anniversary guitars made, each with an inlay of this NYC scene. However, I think this was the only one that they ever produced. Notice the Twin Towers in the inlay?

    4. DAVID MCNAUGHT TEMPEST SER # 0000. I met David at his first Anaheim NAMM show years ago. I was impressed by the four guitars that he had on display, so I commissioned him to make this one. The Tempest model didn't last too long. and not many were made.

I love the wacky floral Ibanez Jems, but here's one that many of you might not ever remember: The Gibson M3.

I hate Gibsons and I hate reverse headstocks, but damnit, I always dug this one!

My guilty pleasure has got to be road worn guitars. Owned a Fender Road Worn Telecaster before and absolutely loved it.

For me it's always been JEM's. For years I had several, including a 10th anniversary, PMC, and each color of the initial run. I loved playing them but in the end some guitar maker in Maryland set the hook on me and the obsession led to gradually selling all of the JEM's and diving into what came out of Maryland. At some point I'll get another JEM 10th again. I sold mine to Ed Roman. I wonder where it is now...

I'm not sure if this will count as ugly...but here goes!

I used to hate Fenders a lot, but for some unknown reason, I really want these in my collection in the future.

For me, I only ever use one pickup when I'm playing Fenders haha, weird me

Here, with a (awkward non-slanted) bridge pickup for a more "eardrum-frying" tone when I feel like it

I don't see any guitar like this in existence, so I can only say the kisekae guitar modeller helped me the most in making the spot-on Strat that I wanted. There are times that I feel, all guitars are designed perfectly the way they are, but there are also times that I like making it a little bit more personal xD

I would love to have a Gibson Firebird, have always thought they were cool, then I saw Tommy Castro play one live, suspicion confirmed. Wish Epiphone made a legit version with mini-hums instead of regular hb's. I think they used to make one with minis, maybe I'll snag one on the bay someday.

Also would love to have a Charvel Bengal... Don't know if that's the actual model name, but the super strat with a Floyd and tiger paint job, 80's rock machine. That being said, Raven, that Spawn Safari is SWEET!!!
-I'm no expert, but it seems to work and I haven't electrocuted myself yet. Which is pretty much the standard I live by.
