A dream just came true for me. Many years ago I came across this 1993 McCarty Prototype, built a year before the McCarty model was introduced. Some of you may remember my all-black PRSi harem shots on Birds & Moons. This prototype perfectly matched the anal-retentive collection of PRSi I've been building for 20 years. I'm an avowed McCarty-style player (as opposed to Custom 24, 513, etc.), and this instrument seemed like my holy grail.
If you need a frame of reference, think about David Grissom's goldtop McCarty Trem he played endlessly before the DGT was released. McTrems: wanted, but rarely seen in the wild. As you know, the McCarty was issued with a stop-tailpiece in keeping with the theory it was going after that type of player/market.
Fast-forward years and at least three owners later, I finally located this elusive instrument, and got for a very reasonable deal. It's essentially a case queen. And how does she play and sound? All I can report after less than 24 hours is I understand the reason Grissom played the early goldtop above every other instrument he had. More to come, but here's the first photo as a teaser.
I'll try to do a new harem shot soon. Thanks for your interest in my long, long chase.
