What is Goldtop listening to?

This is my "T-O-O-T" for Saturday. TO ME, this version by Aretha is one of the best pieces of music ever recorded. By anybody.

WHAT TONE! That studio was amazing. There's probably a more technical name (I sometimes call it resonance), but mostly I refer to it as 'The Sound of The Air'. I'd have to go snoop around to be sure, but if I'm not mistaken Tom Dowd was in on this. Sounds like his work to me.

There is so much going on in this song. So many layers. I think any one track of it could stand on its own if released. (I'd buy them anyway.) JUST the lead vocals, or just the backup vocals. Or THE DRUMS! So complex and so simple at the same time. To me, this is a Masterpiece.



As far as covers go, I dig this one. This band never really made it, and I don't know why. Maybe I'm the only one who liked 'em...?



One more thing, and I'm being sincere. This is directed to all adults who may be reading this:

In the Aretha version, at the 1:20 mark, the background girls/ladies go into the 'woop, woops'... Have you ever had someone you care about - or even love - go 'woop' in your ear like this? Sort of a combination of gently blowing/whispering. A close, warm, loving hug, lean in close, lips right up to your ear, and a gentle 'woop...'. Instant goosebumps.

I've been fortunate enough to both give and receive that in my life, and I recommend it. Under the best of circumstances, it's a direct connection from heart to heart. It's several days early, but my Valentine's Day wish for you all is that you experience that.

Tuesday February 12, 2013. Today is Chynna Phillips' birthday. She's 55. Here's a head-scratcher: When her mother Michelle (of The Mamas & Papas) was pregnant with her, she chose to go with an alternative approach to the childbirth. Experimental incense from The Orient was burned day and night, and Michelle also indulged in the practice of chanting. Her chant of choice was repeated in various languages throughout the pregnancy, and it consisted of the simple phrase 'hold on'. Many years later, that same phrase was the inspiration for this song.

Happy Humpday. The thaw is on here. Between midnight Monday night and daylight Tuesday, we got nearly a foot of snow. It kept snowing off and on all day yesterday, and it was pretty to look at. And as is typical for around here, it's supposed to be in the sixties this weekend.

Back in 2007 I was visiting a friend in Biloxi Mississippi. While I was in town, she wanted to take me to a gig, and we ended up at The Hard Rock Casino and Hotel. The gig was Scandal, Eddie Money, and this guy. WHAT A SHOW! Scandal was great and had the clearest sound of the three. Eddie Money was really who I was there to see, and he put on a good, solid show, did the hits and then some others I wanted to hear, so no complaints there.

Then this guy came out, and to be honest, I wasn't expecting all that much. Was I ever wrong! He tore the place down! One of the best shows I have ever seen. Period. So much for my small mind. My advice is: If you ever get the chance to go see him, don't pass it up.

Rick, if you read this, I am sorry for my narrow mind and small expectations. You are the Real Deal! Thank you for one of the best shows ever.

I always thought Linda was cute. Don't know diddley boo about her, (other than she was supposedly 'involved' with Gov. Brown of California way back when), but I thought she was sexy when she appeared on The Midnight Special. Not really a valid measuring stick for musical ability, but I had raging hormones at the time, so cut me some slack.

This video scares me. It's George Jones when he was a becomming a big name. Not huge yet, not legendary, but working towards it. Johnny Paycheck on bass, vocals, and - unless I miss my guess - stimulants.

The thing here that scares me most is the crowd. Are these children, or Little People, or some of both? And what about the couple towards the end? The old guy with the young girl beside him. 'Connie, we always told you to keep an eye on Pop! Now look what's happened! Looks like he's full of 'shine and mischief to me...

I'd bet my last road aspirin that that drummer is certain trouble, as most drummers are. If that dude isn't a lit fuse waiting to go bang, I've never seen one.

I won't even get into the subject of 'The Love Bug'... Probably a euphemism, right?
