Thanks To JustRob, I Feel Like A Putz

A little background - a few years ago at Experience, Bugs Henderson told a story. He was listening to one of the other guys play, and he heard him getting what he thought was almost a single-coil sound. So he asked about it when the guy came offstage. The guy said it was the coil tap. Bugs said he told someone he wished his CU22 had a coil tap, and they reached out and pulled up the tone knob. I forget how long Bugs said he'd had that guitar, but he had no idea it was there. He went on to say he went back to his hotel room and pulled out the other guitar he had and pulled up the tap - and shot the knob across the room (no tap).

Tuesday, I was watching a couple of Rob's videos from Emil's SE 7-string demo and showing them to my wife. Emil said something about a coil tap. I turned to my wife and said, "Did he just say his 7-string has a tap? Mine doesn't have a tap. I know it doesn't...I'm positive it doesn't...I'm really sure it doesn't...I don't think it does...".

Pulled out the 7-string yesterday. Grabbed the tone knob and pulled.

I've had that guitar for like four months and never thought to try that.

Don't feel so bad Alan - the chaps from Anderton's in the SECU24 vs. Maryland CU24 don't pull up on the SE's tone knob through 30+ minutes of head-to-head demo:

...which is kinda funny since they did a review video on them when the 2012s first came out which showed the splits.

(btw nothing but love for the Anderton's guys, love watching their stuff, and if I drove on the other side of the road/pond I would certainly patronize their establishment!)

Shouldn't feel to bad. It's been proven that 70% of McCarty owners still have no idea there's a coil tap in the tone knob.

Thanks Alan, but Emil deserves all the credit. I picked up a lot of good info from his clinic also.

A few weeks ago I tried out an S2 Mira at a local store. As I plugged it in, the salesman said he thought the S2's have a coil-tap but this one didn't right as I pulled up the tone knob to go to a single coil sound.

Maybe - but I missed that at the demo, so if not for your video, uh, I'd feel schmart!

I can relate- my first few years with PRS guitars were all 80's models. Eventually I got a used PS Custom 24. Played it for over a year 2-3 nights a week. One night a guy asked if he could try it as he said he had never played a PS. He plugged it back in, opened the volume up, and then lifted the tone knob and tapped. I wasn't sure I saw what happened but you can bet that no matter how late I got home that night I was up messing with single coil sounds. I figure if I hadn't let the guy try it I may never have known.

Lots of guys will be pulling on their knobs now because of this.

Alan - you are not alone... I'm sure of it!

I bet if you listen hard you can hear the sound of TONE knobs being pulled all over the internet!

    Thank for sharing!

Oh, and Alan, there are plenty of other reasons you should feel like a putz. Don't be so hard on yourself!
