    The Comprehensive PRS Inlay Guide

Between copying over info from the old place, to people submitting new pics, this should be a nice addition to our new home.

I'll kick it off with the 20th Anniversary Birds originally available in the 2005 Anniversary editions, with some spillover into 06 and 07.

Up close you can see how the "whisps" were a different color than the "birds in flight".

Does anyone know - are PS etched birds always made from mammoth ivory? I guess they are a pretty hefty upcharge?
PS Starla (burnt orange smokeburst), Starla (vintage cherry, IRW neck, birds), 30th ann. Custom 24 WL (honey), HB12 (black gold), 25th ann. Mira 245 (frost blue metallic)

The most common materials for etched birds are gold or mammoth. Gold is a very expensive option, Mammoth less so. Seems they dig them out of the Siberian tundra all the time, so the material is not that expensive.

Cool, thanks. I know mammoth ivory itself is surprisingly plentiful, I guess I just reckoned the actual time spent etching them would drive the cost up quite significantly - how much I suppose depends on whether they are done by hand or by machine, anyone know the answer to that?

I don't know the cost of etching or how they do it, but since no one else has posted a shot of the plain mammoth ivory, here is the un-etched mammoth ivory inlay on my McCarty Singlecut taken when it arrived at Jack's shop; I like the simplicity and natural beauty of it. The wingtips of the Eagle don't appear to be etched, they appear to be a different piece of ivory, but honestly that detail is a guess on my part:

Mammoth Ivory is my favorite - been that way since I first saw it on Jamie's PS HB at one of the unofficial PRS forum gatherings almost 15 years ago.

Also makes me want one of those hammer of the Gods PS SC's...

    Beautiful Moons...

    ...but why no bats...????

The SE Allender was my first PRS. I am still very impressed with the detail and art/application of these inlays.

I really appreciate most of the variations of the birds theme offered by PRS...
I love technology.... when it works....

I've had a couple with etched silver birds as well. Pretty sure they will etch whatever inlay you want them to etch. Looks best on Mammoth Ivory IMHO........

    Les:

It's great to be back! I spent a couple of hours tonight catching up on the past fews months, and read a lot of your posts. Congrats on the "Hammer of the Gods!"

I just got the box sets for the Jimmy P remastered Led Zep 1, II and III, so I am in a Zep state of mind right now...

Wait, I now have a 24.5 inch scale PS-built electric guitar with a maple binding, nitro finish, and Ted headstock. And a paisley case.

Which means you've either influenced me, or I've somehow Seen The Light.

Did you check out the clip? The guitar sounds SO good.

I'm thinking of getting that remastered set in high resolution from HDTracks to use in my studio as reference material, funny you mention it! But honestly, it's great to see your moniker pop up. I hope all has been peachy in your world!
