25! I'd have a hard enough time doing 10.

John Coltrane's A Love Supreme and The Velvet Underground & Nico are the only guaranteed spots in this lifeboat. The rest depend on what I had for breakfast.

Wow, you put some thought into this.

I'd have really sit down and think long and hard about my "25", but one of my choices would most certainly be Buena Vista Social Club and probably the Decemberist's entire catalog

Re: Top 25 "Desert Island" Albums

I can confirm the 'nearly impossible' thing in my case. The stipulation about no Greatest Hits, Best Ofs, etc. really threw me. Anyway, here is my list (as of today anyway):

    1. Chuck Berry - Live at The Fillmore
    2. Johnny Cash - American IV: The Man Comes Around
    3. Johnny Cash - Live at San Quentin
    4. Cheap Trick - Dream Police
    5. Dread Zeppelin - Un-Led-Ed
    6. Dread Zeppelin - 5,000,000
    7. Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
    8. Eric Johnson - Ah Via Musicom
    9. KISS - Destroyer
    10. Led Zeppelin - IV/Zoso/Runes/Whatever
    11. Motorhead - 1916
    12. Willie Nelson - Stardust
    13. Les Paul - Chester and Lester
    14. Elvis - On Stage
    15. Elvis - The Alternate Aloha
    16. REO Speedwagon - Hi Infidelity
    17. Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks
    18. Frank Sinatra - Live at The Meadowlands
    19. Storyville - A Piece of Your Soul
    20. UFO - Obsession
    21. UFO - Strangers in the Night
    22. Stevie - Texas Flood
    23. Howlin Wolf - Moanin' in the Moonlight
    24. ZZ TOP - Deguello
    25. ZZ TOP - Rhythmeen

    Alternates:
Amazing Rhythm Aces - Stacked Deck
Elvis - From Elvis Presley Blvd., Memphis Tenn.
    Howlin Wolf - London Sessions
ZZ TOP - XXX, El Loco
And too many others to list...

Many thanks for a great question/subject.

Man... there are some seriously great albums making lists - and it is causing me to give them another listen.

I'm going to vibe to some Portishead after I post this. Thanks Peter (veinbuster)!

Great album and good odds it would be my Clapton choice.
It has lots of good stuff but Thorn Tree In The Garden always wins out for me and is on my "Stranded" play list - which I forgot to consult when writing my list.

Re: Top 25 "Desert Island" Albums

Actually, this post is a bit irrelevent to me as I really don't think of music in terms of albums any longer. It's so easy now to just pick songs that I'd really put together a list of songs to take with me as opposed to complete albums. That's why greatest hits would actually be nore appropriate choices.

Steve, your point speaks to the heart of this thread. Everyone seems to think in terms of the individual song now. I suppose iTunes has a lot to do with that. I'm not knocking it. It is what it is.

But there are still artists who prefer to think about their music in terms of the album - with each song in context of the other. There are listeners who also prefer that perspective. But most people are focused on individual songs and compilations/playlists. That is why I think a great album has become a hard find.

Re: Top 25 "Desert Island" Albums

If the cassette had one redeeming characteristic, it would be all the great tunes that I only came to love from being to lazy to fast forward. I kind of miss full albums, with the exemption on Wham! all the ones I had listed are great front to back, for me at least. I feel my list would be totally different if it was top 25 singles, and would almost be exclusively Motown.

I really like albums. Its very hard to tell who somebody is from one song, or even the collections of one songs that many albums are these days.

All the visual artists I know think in terms of a 'body of work' and that is what they want to have seen. For me music is the same. Though I do also assemble playlists that are mostly background; i.e. they play while I'm doing something else.
