FIVE MINUTES WITH JOHN PAUL

PRS: Throughout the course of your career, you’ve collaborated with a wide range of artists. What would you say is the single most valuable thing you’ve learned working in so many different environments?

John: Throughout my career, the single most valuable lesson I’ve learned from collaborating with diverse artists is the importance of openness and adaptability. Every collaboration brings new perspectives, ideas, and approaches, and being receptive to these differences has enriched my creativity and growth as an artist. It’s taught me to embrace change, remain flexible, and continuously learn from others, ultimately enhancing the quality and depth of my work.

PRS: In addition to your work as a guitarist, you work quite a bit behind the scenes as a producer. Do you see yourself more as a guitarist than producer, or do both roles receive equal priority?

John: I consider both roles of being a guitarist and a producer as equally important and complementary to each other. While my passion for playing the guitar drives me creatively on stage, my work behind the scenes as a producer allows me to shape and refine the overall sound and direction of the music. Each role brings its own unique challenges and rewards, and I strive to give both the attention and priority they deserve in my career.

PRS: Growing up in India, what was your first exposure to PRS Guitars? Do you remember your first time playing one?

John: In India, particularly when I began playing guitar, access to instruments was quite limited. Acquiring a specific instrument that I had seen or heard elsewhere required a great deal of time and patience. It wasn't as simple as walking into a store and purchasing it; rather, it involved diligent searching, waiting, and sometimes even importing from abroad. Each instrument I managed to obtain represented not just a piece of gear, but a triumph of perseverance and a gateway to new musical possibilities. A good friend of mine from my city who runs the oldest music shop in Kolkata suggested me my first PRS which is an S2 Custom 24. I remember being instantly captivated by its impeccable craftsmanship, smooth playability, and rich tone. It was a transformative moment that fueled my desire to own and play a PRS guitar in my own performances and I never looked back.

PRS: What are your plans for the remainder of the year, are there any projects or releases we should be keeping an eye and ear out for in the future?

John: Alongside collaborating with some of the biggest Indian luminaries throughout my journey, I've dedicated the past five years to crafting my own solo musical album. Set to debut by the end of 2024, this album will feature an array of maestros and renowned artists from across the globe, as well as from India. Drawing influences from genres as diverse as funk, pop, jazz, metal, Cuban, and beyond, the album promises a unique fusion enriched with the essence of Indian classical music. It's been an exhilarating journey of creative exploration, and I can't wait to share this musical tapestry with the world.

Its versatility knows no bounds, allowing me to effortlessly traverse through every genre imaginable with literally just one guitar in hand. PRS resonates with me in a way that no other instrument does.
